Seemingly came out to be 153528Thanks Bill. I will keep an eye on this tomorrow - a move to Canton could be another step towards a return to service. Would be ideal if it could return within the next 2 weeks![]()

153528 visible from the platform at NNP this morning.Seemingly came out to be 153528
I see a 158 was working in the South yesterday on a Cardiff-Pembroke Dock diagram.
These are becoming very rare now in the South. I would like to ride a 158 one last time before they disappear. If it wasnt for the Rugby yesterday I might have gone for it!
I see its on Ebbw Vale today.

Of the /9s being stood down that'll be all bar 935 at Landore.
150242 was seen this morning with people working on adding the actual branding, unlike 279, to it. It's nearly ready now I believe.Any further news on 150242?
At Landore?150242 was seen this morning with people working on adding the actual branding, unlike 279, to it. It's nearly ready now I believe.
Oh, yes. Forgot to specify, that's my bad.At Landore?
No worries, thanks for clarifyingOh, yes. Forgot to specify, that's my bad.
when passing Canton today I noticed a 158 was in the sidings but unfortunately I didnt see the number, was too far away. I havent noticed any 158s out and about on the network today however so not sure if it was down in Cardiff for maintenance.
158837 is coming down from Shrewsbury. Could be 818, 827, 833, 836, 839 at Canton.Realtime Trains | 2I39 2312 Cardiff Central to Newport (South Wales) | 22/03/2025

158837 allocated on RTT to work 2I39 and back to Canton, might be that.
I imagine that is exam or C6 related?158837 is coming down from Shrewsbury. Could be 818, 827, 833, 836, 839 at Canton.
The last services on the Marches are temporary booked with a 158 tagged on your get them to/from Canton. The Cambrian line is closed for engineering for some time so likely maintenance is being done at Canton.
Saw a 158 about 10 minutes ago at Llanharan working it's way back to Cardiff, guessing it didn't make it out in the morning but ended up going later. Still surprised to see a 158 down south!I checked RTT to see what it was and weirdly it said it was a 158 at the time even though it had departed Cardiff nearly 1 hour before!
I think one was out on a Pembroke Dock diagram today. Nice to see them still in the South, will have to try and catch one before they go.Saw a 158 about 10 minutes ago at Llanharan working it's way back to Cardiff, guessing it didn't make it out in the morning but ended up going later. Thanks a lot for the further update - I edge ever nearer to another visit to Cardiff150242 was seen this morning with people working on adding the actual branding, unlike 279, to it. It's nearly ready now I believe.
Why are the 153/9s being stood down if they are not being converted to Active Travel spec? Do they have issues with exams/overhauls that are required at a certain date/mileage TfW don't want to pay for like the 150s?As far as I'm aware the ones that are there (except 972 which is being converted to Active Travel spec) are all stood down awaiting officially being stored and off-leased.
Presumably TfW are retaining only the sets that they actually own - they only own two of the 153/9s.Why are the 153/9s being stood down if they are not being converted to Active Travel spec? Long-term, yes, I would expect them to only keep the sets they own (which I understand is 13 units in total (across all subclasses)). However the (17 ?) class 153s that TfW have on-lease are leased for another year yet so why not make use of them to lengthen services?Presumably TfW are retaining only the sets that they actually own - they only own two of the 153/9s.
It may be capacity at canton for stabling / service. If canton are working on the 150s, 231s and 756s with possible future light work on 197s. Add to that the 67s and it may be there's no longer capacity for the 153/9s.Long-term, yes, I would expect them to only keep the sets they own (which I understand is 13 units in total (across all subclasses)). But in the interim they could still use them on the likes of Maesteg and Ebbw Vale to free up 197s to ensure all of their other diagrams are covered/not short formed! And bear in mind 153s are pretty limited now in what work they can do. They're not cleared for the Taff Valley side of the Valley lines, there's no longer the traincrew to work them in North Wales, and they're not compatible with the 197s and 231s that are working most of the services in the places they can still go. They're winding them down ready for the future, where they'll only be on HOWL and Crewe-Shrewsbury locals.
I agree. They could use 3 x 153s on a couple of Maesteg to Ebbw Vales for example to free up more 197s for where they are neededLong-term, yes, I would expect them to only keep the sets they own (which I understand is 13 units in total (across all subclasses)).
