So basically, the 153s are now going go be a micro fleet for TfW, confined just to Heart of Wales services?
Meanwhile 150s cover elsewhere until they are sent for scrap.

Heart of Wales and Crewe local service.

Does anyone know how many serviceable 153s there are at the moment with the ones that are stood down for being converted to active travel etc. They seem to be very thin on the ground currently with only a couple of diagrams ?

Down to 2 diagrams only at the minute and even those are the Active Travel units. No diagrams for standard 153s at all. Crewe Shrewsbury local is diagramed for a 150 at the minute, as well as 1V99/1W70 on the marches seeing a 150 booked. Complete contrast to how things were only a few weeks ago!

Short term plan diagrams now in place as a result to cover various Chester guards diagrams on the Crewe-Shrewsbury locals as a result due to lack of 150 competency!

The only active 153s at the moment are AT03 (303+531) and AT04 (382+552). There's no diagrams for the others, locations are:

153312 Landore since 31st March for forming into a PRM Active travel set.
153318 Canton since 11th April
153323 Canton since 12th April
153327 Crewe since 3rd April
153353 Canton since 18th March
153362 Canton since 19th March
153367 Canton since 11th April
153369 Canton since 12th April

Does anyone have numbers on how many 150s TfW have left now, and how many they'll have by the end of this year?
With the full introduction of 398s on the Valleys not due until late next year, some 150s will need to be kept going for up to another 21 months.

AFAIK the active fleet is currently 150208/213/217/231/235/240/241/245/251/252/254-260/262/264/267/278/279/280/282/283/284/285 so 27 units left, 242 should re-join once its back up and running.

Of those they've all been used in the last few days except; 150252 which has been at Canton since 13th March and 150283 at Canton since 26th February.

They were showing the other day but neither are today. AT03 and AT04 were a pair from Canton earlier, shown as 4 car on RTT but that's all that was there.

All the non Active Travel 153s that arent at Landore are now at Canton (other than 2 long term ones at Crewe) with no diagrams so the future doesn't look good for those, none have been used for a couple of days.

153320 and 153325 have become the 14th and 15th 153s to make their way to Landore
I work it as 14 in total
906, 909, 910, 913, 914, 921, 922, 926, 935, 320, 325, 329, 333, 361 all withdrawn

Can we assume that the active travel 153s will have had something like a C4 or a C6 exam during their conversion - ie doors, couplers, bogies etc. Technically no planned withdrawal for them and they will be 40 years old from next year.

That tallies with my list. 150240 goes in the bin by the 21st. It had an outing to Pembroke Dock today. Seven more have C6 deadlines this year so there could still be 20 left by the end of the year.

Is 150279 included in those to go this year please?

Wow they won’t have any left soon
Must be 323, 367 & 369 they are the last 3 they don’t own
It hasn't run so far but with the 5T67 headcode seems a cert for 153367 to be included.

AT02 is now shown as formed from 153353+153528.

Looks like the AT set numbers are in order of the 1535xx vehicle so seems the next formations will be:
AT01- 153312+153507 (312 already at Landore)
AT05- 153327+568 (327 already at Crewe along with 968)
AT06- 153318 or 153362+153572 whichever of that pair isn't used would be the spare.

Are these set formations?

Should have paired 318 with 568 to reunite 155318!

Will all the TfW 150s be scrapped or will some be cascaded to other operators? What about the 158s?

They are all set for scrap, to continue they'd need expencive exams/maintenance that no-one is paying for
What about the 158s?
Heard rumours on the forums that Northern could potentially take them (they would certainly be useful).

Romic Group (who successfully exported HSTs to Mexico and Nigeria) are, or at least were, interested in them. Possibly they can find a country less fussy about maintenance.
So maybe sold at scrap prices, but not necessarily actually scrapped.

Romic's web site offers 150s ("Standard Gauge Multiple Units (DMU) for Sale") with a picture of one in TfW livery

It says:
Unit shown is an example of units available and is offered subject to prior sale

then below:
CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE - please enquire for similar units.

I was aware of the C6 exams, hopefully they will find homes abroad or used as spare parts donors.

My thoughts are the 175s going to GWR won’t be enough to replace all Castles and IETs on regional services so to enable this maybe GWR could take some of the 158s?

Have any preservation groups expressed interest? I know Northern and GWR 150s would probably be in better shape than the TfW ones by the end of their working life, but would be a shame if no Welsh 150s are preserved, but I understand it would be a big undertaking for a heritage group to do a C6.
