Following on from this thread, here is the poll for Beeching's worst closure.

You can pick 5 lines only. FIVE.

On Sunday evening the final answers will be revealed.

Worse than, and predating any of those was -
The Liverpool Overhead Railway.

Nah!

Lynton & Barnstaple without a doubt.

There was a thread where people nominated lines in History & Nostalgia. Unfortunately places like Lynton, Lampeter, Brecon, Dulverton, Staithes, Loftus, Alnwick & Consett weren't mentioned and therefore didn't make the cut here.

Depending where you are in the country will influence your views on what a good or bad closure was.

Clearly I support the Boston to Grimsby via Louth & Mablethorpe line most.
But I also picked the Ripon, Whitby to Scarborough, Woodhead, & York to Beverley lines as they'll be good.

WOW! It's neck and neck...

...all I will say is:

-the leader has 12 points
-second place has 11
-third place has 10

Hopefully the GCR isn't in the top 3, never understood the fervour for that one.

What about Sudbury to Haverhill, a new town that was being developed when the railway closed. Hows that for forward planning

Another planet...
I'm afraid I spoiled my ballot paper.

As did I, I should've read down and realised I could pick more than one...

I voted for Mablethorpe as it removed pretty much the whole county of Lincolnshire (bar a couple of routes) from the railway network entirely. My first choice would've been Brockholes to Holmfirth but it wasn't listed. I'd also say the LNWR Leeds "New Line" was a bigger loss than Spen Valley as it took people where they now want to go.

Voted for 3. The ones I know.
There are several that I would vote for but not on the poll.
One of the biggest losses in Cornwall is the Truro Chasewater, (Blackwater Junction) Goonhavern, St Agnes Perranporth Newquay line. Many people at the time said that was more important than the Par Newquay.
The survey was flawed.
Chasewater is a village. The only ticket receipts taken were Chasewater to Newquay. It was a busy line. Truro to Newquay tickets discarded, along with St Agnes Perranporth Goonhavern etc.

Apologies, but the GC was one of my five for its strategic value.

Apologies; I appear to have accidentally voted for six as I have six lines showing in italics after I voted.

For the record, Beeching never proposed Woodhead for closure. In fact, he selected for further development.

Government incompetence and BR mismanagement saw to that one.
