The big sell off of our Defence Equipment.
The big sell off of our Defence Equipment.
Can't even rely on the Australians buying British surplus now that the Yanks have got that market cornered tooOne also wonders how reducing, or at least failing to expand, our worldwide naval capabilities is going to fit with Global Britain and AUKUS.
The Royal Navy is currently more capable than it has been for a good 30 years. But this is how it always goes: the taxpayer pays a fortune for new equipment, spends years getting the kit to work via extra expensive contracts (if the kit does work) and then it is flogged off for a pittance. But - here’s the important thing - it provides lots of money for the defence industry. HMS London and Coventry were sold to Romania for £116 million (the pair) by BAe: MoD got £100,000 (Guardian, 13 June 2006).
One also wonders how reducing, or at least failing to expand, our worldwide naval capabilities is going to fit with Global Britain and AUKUS. And of course the turning away from Europe means we are likely to be more reliant on food brought in over long-distance sea-routes. The lessons of two world wars seem to have been forgotten.
If I set up a GoFundMe page, are you in?Some good stuff there. You could take over an african country with all that gear!
