This is the earliest Railway Magazine that I have so far been able to view. A rather tatty copy with both front two and at least the back two pages missing.

The first thing to note is the four pages of advertising given over to removal and storage companies! ...

There should be a copy in one of the 3 "copyright" libraries in Edinburgh , Aberystwyth and the British Library - freely accessible to the public.

Don't forget Oxford and Cambridge (and also Trinity College Dublin) — the other three copyright libraries since 1903. (That date helps to explain the early years gaps in the OS map holdings on the invaluable National Library of Scotland web-site.)

I did some research years ago and found some broadsheets had no news on the front page but full of adverts.

Not free, but a digital subscription to the Railway Magazine grants access to an online archive containing a copy of every railway magazine. The early (pre-grouping) ones are an especially valuable source of information and photographs.

Those adverts in the Railway Magazine 1899 include some for deafness - these adverts increased hugely and were no doubt a result of the world wide pogrom instigated in 1880 against the deaf (no doubt due to Alexander Graham Bell’s efforts to rid the world of deaf people), thus being deaf was seen as something absolutely negative – as often is still these days. Interestingly, as research undertaken shows, it was railway interests including financiers and backers who helped fund the said crusades against the deaf.
