Does only one trip, a single journey to Stalybridge.

Where does that unit go after Stalybridge, is it in timetabled passenger use or is it moved to start a journey somewhere else?

    Just wondered, ta!

Until October it is booked to run with 3 sets, as 5J45 also takes the unit from the 07:30 arrival from Chester

Did it last Friday and I can confirm it had three sets - 142013+142095+150205 for the record.

For the record during the rest of the week, the set still operates empty from Manchester to Wilmslow and then back through Stockport, Reddish South and Denton, before branching off the route to Guide Bridge at Denton Junction, and then continues via Ashton Moss Junction to Newton Heath.

    Thanks for that.
Often wondered if they HAVE to run a train just the once, then why not on a Saturday so saddos like me can catch it just because....
But I suppose if it's a train going to a scheduled appointment, then so be it!

These sorts of trains are often referred to as "parliamentaries".

I may be mistaken but I thought the relevant legislation called for one train a DAY.

If so, I wonder how they get away with one train a week in one direction only? Why not make it one train a month, one train a year or even one train a Preston Guild?

On Monday to Thursday, when it runs purely as an ECS move, is the train crewed by a driver only?

Do Northern have to provide a guard every Friday morning to join the train for the Stockport - Stalybridge leg, or will s/he ride with the empty train for the rest of its journey?

Not certain how they get round that one tbh, although if it got as rare as one train a year the attraction of riding it would probably be so great that they would need something the size of a HST to operate it ;)

It will be driver only Monday-Thursday.

I think on Fridays they have to get a Victoria based conductor to work the service opposed to a Piccadilly one, which means a taxi to Piccadilly or Stockport would be provided.

That's the 1844 Act which I don't think is relevant any more, despite the Parly label.

Technically , it could be one train a year. Anything to save the long drawn out closure process.

Yes the Halton Curve runs once per week in one direction also - but only in summer therefore there's approx 9 months between services at one point in the year

Funny you should say that. If it were to run this coming Saturday around 17:30(ish), and a corresponding southbound run about 14:00(ish) it could be quite busy with footy fans watching the National League North fixture between Stockport County and Stalybridge Celtic.
