Evening all,

A couple of photos from Sunday featuring 22022 + 22007 on a 1630 Laois Traincare - Heuston empty working which would later form a GAA Special to Limerick Junction and 232 on the 1345 Tralee - Heuston with 7 MKIII. Several Tralee line services were locohauled today after engineering works at Ballybrophy on Saturday afternoon meant the Intercity DMU's were displaced for their next day workings.
Photos at: http://thewanderersirishrailphotos.fotopic.net/c1740099.html

Also I've uploaded a video of 234 passing Portarlington with the 1745 Tralee - Heuston, 8 MKIII's.

Evening all,

The Dublin Sligo line is currently closed for 10 days between Dromod and Sligo for the replacement of the Shannon Bridge at Drumsna. I travelled to Drumsna today to see the last of four spans being lifted into position from the comfort of a Crusier on the River Shannon, plus a visit to Dromod to see the Cavan and Leitrim Railway.

The new timetable sees the end of Class 29000's to Carlow and indeed all Heuston based workings so I took a spin to Carlow this evening to sample a 29000 on the Waterford Branch for one final time.

Tamper 751 was stabled in Kildare and Sandite 734 was going out on its nightly trip of the Dublin Suburban System.

Finally 084 arrived at Kildare with the Westport - Waterford Timber.

Evening folks,

Several updates to the website this evening from a busy Saturday afternoon exploring the expanding Tram system in Dublin.

The first two updates are of the LUAS Depots at Red Cow and Sandyford which maintain the Alstom built fleet of trams for the two lines. Each depot also has a Unilok Shunting locomotive for moving trams in and around the depots.
http://thewanderersirishrailphotos.fotopic.net/c1788909.html - Red Cow
http://thewanderersirishrailphotos.fotopic.net/c1788948.html - Sandyford

Also updated is the LUAS Extensions Construction Gallery showing the latest progress on the extensions to Cherrywood and The Point. The Point tramline is scheduled to open for public service on Tuesday the 8th December.
http://thewanderersirishrailphotos.fotopic.net/c1307425_73.html

Finally after the travels on the narrow gauge it was time for some broad gauge gricing with a visit to Connolly and Pearse Stations in the evening time. The usual diet of 8100's, 2800's and 29000's was viewed on Suburban services along with the Railway Preservation Society of Ireland's Steam Loco No. 4 which was in charge of the Santa Specials to Maynooth.

Ireland's newest train station opened for business on Monday 19th April 2010.

Clongriffin Station situated on the North Side of Dublin on the Dublin - Belfast railway line was built by Developer Gerry Gannon who paid 65 per cent of the station’s cost with developers Seán Mulryan and Séamus Ross paying the balance.

Any chance of a bus to the airport from this new shack? Its got to be pretty close, the aerdart bus from Howth Jn was most useful when it ran, much better than staggering into town.

Fat chance of that sadly!

The airlink bus operated by Dublin Bus (747/748) is the fastest route into the city centre as it uses the Port Tunnel into the city centre (especially during peak hours). Off Peak it is still faster to go non stop via Drumcondra.

Unless your final destination was near a rail station the aerdart bus was to roundabout and a time consuming route into the city centre. Plus Howth Jct isn't the best of areas and not really safe for tourists to be interchanging from bus / train / bus. Ripe for attention from the local youths.

Anyway!

Evening folks,

While Csalem was off covering steam on the GNR mainline I was on the GSWR mainline to photo the G.A.A. Specials from Cork and Waterford for the All-Ireland Hurling Semi-Final between Cork & Kilkenny.

Three Specials operated for the match. Two from Cork formed of 222 + MKIV 4006 and 22038 while Kilkenny had to make do with one special from Waterford which was worked by 22033. Certainly not as interesting as recent years gone by when Cravens, MKII's, MKIII's and MKIII's Push / Pull's would often turn up. Some relief was provided by the unexpected arrival of 226 on a trial from Inchicore to Sallins.

Photos from the Iron Bridge near Sallins and Straffin are now online at: http://thewanderersirishrailphotos.fotopic.net/c1880166.html

Morning folks,

On Saturday 11th September the Irish Railway Record Society operated a 2nd railtour over the soon to be closed South Wexford railway. The railtour departed Connolly at 1020 and operated to Rosslare Europort. After Rosslare the train stopped at all stations on the line to Waterford before then heading for Carlow and back to Dublin Connolly arriving 14 minutes late at 2020. The tour was delayed at Carlow due to late running service trains.

Evening all,

After working the Waterford - Ballina Ety Timber on Tuesday 085 was declared a failure in Ballina. To get it back to Inchicore for some attention it was hauled up dead in train by 215 on the 0930 Ballina - North Wall IWT Liner.

Two pictures of it passing Portarlington on its way to Dublin.

On Saturday the Railway Preservation Society of Ireland operated a Connolly - Mullingar - Inchicore carriage transfer with 083 and RPSI coach 1916. At Mullingar Craven 1514 was added to the train. This coach has been internally rebuilt into a bar at the RPSI workshop at Mullingar.

The train was photographed at Killucan, Mullingar, Enfield and Lucan North.

The previous attempt to collect the coach on the Best of Both railtour on the 3rd of October failed due to a brake fault.

Saturday also marks the final day of Dublin Bus route 10 which is being withdrawn from today as part of the Network Direct project. To mark the final day of operation I ventured to the Phoenix Park terminus and the North Circular Road to take some photographs.

All the photos from the day, including internal photos of 1514 showing off the new bar are now online at http://thewanderersirishrailphotos.fotopic.net/c1911190.html

Evening all,

I ventured out this evening to catch the three undamaged vehicles (22137, 22737, 22337) of the infamous 22037 being moved from Laois Train Care to Heuston Carriage Shed. As 22037 is not fit to move under its own power, 22007 was used to haul the set to Dublin Heuston.

The damaged three vehicles are currently in Railcare Springburn undergoing repairs and are expected back in early 2011.

Ever since been introduced in October 2006 the MKIV fleet has led a rather mundane life operating between Dublin and Cork on the hourly Intercity Service with the odd working from Heuston to Portlaoise or Thurles on Commuter services. Planned Train Size in passenger service has always been 8 vehicles long until today. (There was one exception on the 27th September 2007 following a derailment in Cork Yard when a one way movement of a 6 car occured on the 1830 Cork - Heuston).

On Monday 6th December 2010 the spare set, consisting of a 6 car MKIV set (4007 + 4201 + 4408 + 4126 + 4139 + 4135) entered service in an effort to increase fleet availability for the Cork line and the ability to recover from delays during the inclement weather. Its first workings were the 0800 Heuston - Cork and 1130 Cork - Heuston.

The return working from Cork is pictured passing Clonkeen, near Portlaoise in freezing conditions.

Hi all,

On Tuesday 14th December the Limerick Wagon Works - Inchicore "Wheel Carrier transfrer" operated. Along with the normal transfer of wheels the train also had 2 Tara Mines Wagons, 2 LX and 2 LP wagons being transferred back to North Wall. 073 was the motive power for the train.

Afternoon all,

On Saturday 5th March the Irish Traction Group in association with the Downpatrick & County Down Railway launched GM146 into Preservation.

Locos in use during the day were RB3 (which sadly failed on the first trip and had to be rescued by 146!), 146 and A39.

Despite the failure of RB3 and a bit of late running it was excellent day. Big thanks to all at the ITG and the D&CDR for making it a very enjoyable day.

Photos from the day are now online at: http://thewanderersirishrailphotos.fotopic.net/c1948067.html

Evening all,

Latest photos are now at: http://thewanderersirishrailphotos.fotopic.net/c1950274.html

Highlights:

Monday
- NIR 8113 at Connolly about to run L.E. to Belfast York Road. It had brought failed 231 down from Belfast on the Sunday.

Tuesday
- 088 went L.E. from Portlaoise Per Way Depot to Limerick at 1400hrs today.

- A very rare 6 car 2700 set operated from Inchicore to Limerick today. Mixed liveried 2724 + 2715 + 2751 operated from Limerick to Inchicore this morning and collected ex works ICR liveried 2753 + 2726 + 2723. The entire 6 vehicles then returned to Limerick shortly after 1100hrs. Obviously 2753 + 2726 + 2723 weren't in a condition to be allowed out on the mainline on their own. They were photographed passing Portlaoise.

- Later that day another 2700 was working on the Cork mainline. Due to Justin Bieber playing at the O2 in Dublin tonight many morning services from Cork, Tralee and Limerick were heavily loaded. As a result the 1000 Limerick - Limerick Junction was extended to Heuston as a relief to the 0930 Cork - Heuston. It returned to Limerick following the 1300 Heuston - Cork and was photographed at Portlaoise.

The Wanderer, I can't seem to access your fotopic page, or anyone elses for that matter.

Is there a problem with the site at the moment? Its probably just me though!

Thanks, Matt

Hi Matt,

I was away for the weekend and didn't have access to the internet. I'm sure you are aware by now that fotopic has been offline since lunchtime on Wednesday. Why? Well that's a good question as none of us, i.e. the paying customers know.

We live in interesting times.

Thanks wanderer for the clarification. After reading a bit about it, it does really appear to be a disgrace. I may have to go without seeing your and others pictures for some time! Hopefully it'll be resolved quickly.

Good evening all,

After the recent (and continuing) fotopic farce I'm giving smugmug a month's trial.

The photos previously hosted on fotopic will be reuploaded as time permits. After all there is 5 years and approximately 10,000 photos to get through so it is going to take some time and it's a task i'm really looking forward to!

At the moment I have created three galleries, two of these are some of the eldest from fotopic
- A from the past collection Beet Train Memories 28th Dec 2005
- A from the past collection Filming "The Wind that shakes the Barley"

The third collection is photos from March 2011. Highlights from this collection include 2610 + 2613 working the 0720 Tralee - Heuston onwards from Killarney on Saturday 19th March due to the failure of 22033.

The new address is http://thewandererphotos.smugmug.com/

Please feel free to leave comments and suggestions.
