How long for? I think advice would vary depending on whether it's say an hour or three days ;)

Most of those aren't in Inverness though.

Inverness is a great base for exploring the highlands, but other than shops and pubs, there's not a great deal to do in the city.

Take a walk along he river if its a nice day. or get a return ticket to Kyle, sit back and admire the view.

Would it be out of order to suggest that you check tour guides/wikitravel etc before booking tickets with a long wait (I assume your primary reason is crank related)

Boat trip on Loch Ness was good when I did it, open top bus less so - okay on a sunny day. Or a trip to Kyle and back :D

There is a minature railway in Inverness, but it might only be open in the high summer. Ness Park Railway or something like that. About a mile out of town to the west on the north side of the river, near the botanic gardens.

They were quite good when I went with family, but I'd imagine it'd be a different experience on your own :?

If you've got a full day then I would thoroughly recommend the Kyle line. £22.50 SDR for an adult, but it will be the best £20+ you spend on a train for a very long time. Second only to the West Highland line for scenery in my eyes, it's an absolute cracker.

If it's raining and you don't want to mooch about the streets too much

- There is a very good West Indian restaurant with a very friendly chef. I think they clam to be Scotland's only one. No reason why Inverness shouldn't have an ethnic restaurant of course, but the brilliant Rasta colours outside come as bit of a shock in the drizzle after a run of tartan-gonk and furry-Nessie shops.

- Actually, Inverness is remarkably unTouristy considering it must get quite a bit of its income from visitors. It is the centre for a huge rural area, it's even the big-city-shopping centre for Skye. So it is a down to earth 'local place for local people'. ...As well of course as selling clan Goldblumberger tartan to Scottish Americans (ie Yanks who are Scottish because one of their 64 greatgreat.etc grandparents came from there). I liked it a lot, and I'm going again in a few weeks thanks to my Northern free ticket and my DailyRecord £19 voucher.

- Spend hours in the massive massive massive secondhand bookshop and caff in an old church or chapel (lovely huge iron stove when it's cold outside).

- Visit the Victorian indoor market for a snoop round and a Scottish Breakfast in the Greasy Spoon (quite refined, actually, but still cheap). Do some research so you'll be prepared when they ask if you like your sausage flat or round (oo er, Missus).

- Visit the bus/coach station to see what short trips are available, and pick up a bazillion coach timetables and "what to do" leaflets. The caff is quite good and the loos are remarkably respectable and clean for a bus station.

- Get on a nice warm coach (or perhaps a boat, one way) to the Loch Ness visitor centre. Cheesy as flip because of the "last year someone saw something unexplainable in the loch" shlock (coincidentally, nearly always 'someone' who does Nessie-hunting boat trips for a living ). But the Centre is in a lovely location and the trip along the Great Glen is spectacular.

We had a couple of days there during the balmy weather in March - six inches of snow the following week!! - I would recommend catching the bus to Cullloden battlefield, not far at all, bus goes right up to the entrance, very informative and new visitor centre. We very much enjoyed it.
If pubs/real ale are your thing I would recommend Castle Tavern.

They are certainly mine, and I'll be there in a few weeks, so thanks for the recommendation.

Do you know a good beer pub in Fort William, and Aberdeen?

It's been a couple of years since I was in Fort William, but I think the best pub for decent ale was called something like 'Grog & Gruel' - different Scottish brews...yum!

Slightly off-topic (as usual), but I fondly remember having a few hours to kill there on a railtour on a Sunday in the '80s. Everything closed, as you would imagine. Bunch of loudmouths who had been making a nuisance of themselves throughout the previous couple of days asks if we had found anywhere serving food. "No...but we did see a sign saying 'Currys' along the end of the next street". Gratifying stampede of yobs in direction indicated. (Sadly, they returned in time for the train, though some got left behind in Perth, but that's a different story)

Visit Nessie! sorry it had to be done :p!

But seriously, a boat trip on Loch Ness is pretty good. The comentry from the tour guide can be interesting too.

Can anyone reccomend a decent (cheap) hotel/hostel in Inverness for one night in July? Ideally close to the station as I'll be on the 07:55 to KX the next morning.

We stayed at the Wetherspoons, 5 mins from station, don't know what your budget is but it was about £50 and decent enough. The Premier travel inn is quite a walk. Don't know about hostels but there must be some!
