This is a reaction to the SSP station catering thread . So list your alternatives here.
BUT must be close to the train station.
Might as well include places to avoid too.

I will start with Esquires, 31 Broadway, Bradford BD1 1HA. Nice coffee, and snacks, and 0.3 miles from Forster Sq. Bit of a step from Interchange tho.

Any station with a supermarket nearby which there are loads. Crediton Tesco, Fort William Morrisons or Tesco Express, are two examples

I don't know who owns them , but my favourite coffee was from knot . I used the one inside Richmond station. They specialise in pretzels.

Greggs are not always the best, Birds (in Notts and Derbs) and Cooplands (the Lincs version only) both do better sausage rolls.

In Cleethorpes, go to Browns on the prom nearby, they are cheap, have seating (but no bathrooms, lack of wheelchair access sadly) but allow takeaway too.
In Hull, the Way to London cafe, although in the station building, is quite well hidden, but is perfect for a full English breakfast.
In Scunthorpe, Sarah's is the only place to eat at worth visiting.
Fleetwood's main tram stop is close to Pablo's, they have always served great food.
If travelling across the ferry from South Shields to get to North Shields station, a detour to the Sambuca restaurant is a must, the area might look like an industrial wasteland, but it is the best cafe north of the Humber.

Sheffield, Preston, and Nottingham have no cheap food option to my knowledge nearby (in Nottingham I go to a cafe opposite to that cat hair cafe but I can't remember it's name, in Preston the fish restaurant in the basement of the St George's Centre, in Sheffield I am forced to use Burgerking), it would be useful to know if I am missing somewhere in these towns, many thanks.

Yesterday, Piggy Banks' cafe, facing the entrance to Bolton Trinity Street, had a board saying "coffee £1" so that's good value! Note a pint of beer is only £3 there as well!! Oh, and you get to meet the resident pigeon Bobby if he's not out for a bit of fresh air.

Think Greggs in the interchange has a cup of tea for 95p? Might have gone up, that was a few months ago. Still if it has, better price than the cafe in the station.

(Little) Plough, Doncaster is my usual port of call for beer near the station, though the Railway pub and The Leopard pub are marginally closer. The Draughtsman alehouse on P3 of the station is alright, but not that big.

Within a 100 or so yard radius of the two Wigan stations (which are not even that far apart for those unfamiliar with the layout), there is a very good selection of eateries to meet most requirements. There is no "supermarket", not even a Local or Metro version, so no meal deals, but there is a McColls next door to Wallgate if you do want sandwiches of that type.

However, I wouldn't advise it as you have the following...

Turn right out of North Western and walk up Wallgate, you have Kawa's Bar first of all. This is a relatively new local business offering a range of sandwiches, pizzas, cakes, coffee etc. Not the cheapest, although I had the £9.50 lunchtime special today of sandwich, homemade soup, coffee. It's a pleasant place to eat too.

Next up is The Station Cafe, directly opposite Wallgate Station offering a cheaper range of dishes. Only open until mid-afternoon, but the all day breakfast is great value. I only have the veggie one (fried egg, mushrooms, tomatoes, baked beans, hash brown, toast, cup of tea or coffee) for £4! Veggie sausage can be added for 80p. I imagine the carnivore version is just as good. They do breakfast barms, egg and chips, etc too. Good place to people watch if you get a window seat.

A couple of doors along is Galloways. Take away only, but Wigan's own pie shop. Usual range of pies and pasties and you can have a Wigan kebab if you really want (that's a pie in a barm). Good cream cakes too.

Carry on up the hill into the town centre (no distance at all) for a range of pubs, take aways etc, but sticking within the remit of this thread, I'll take you across the road and back down Wallgate to the Wallgate Chippy which is the second best chippy in the town centre (The New Chippery on Market Street is the best), but perfectly adequate.

A little further along is The Swan and Railway. A fine multi-roomed pub with excellent Draught Bass. Sky Sports if you like that sort of thing too.

Now, under the railway bridge and cross the road (or if coming directly from North Western, turn left and left), to get to the Arches with four possibilities.

First up is the real ale mecca Wigan Central. Railway-themed and with regularly changing beers (plus bottled stuff) to meet all tastes, it's great. I had two pints of Bank Top Dark Mild in a handled mug yesterday evening. Marvellous. Some limited food (Scotch eggs, cheese board etc).

Next door is my favourite place in Wigan - Hideout. Another local business with the best coffee in town. Normally got an excellent vegan cake or two too. Cheese toasties are fantastic, but so is the whole menu. Also does beer etc. Note it only opens at 11am.

Third place in the Arches is Plata Tapas which I have not yet visited. You probably realise it's a tapas restaurant and has very good reviews - again local and independent. I'm going on 4th March so will update then. Only open Thursday to Sunday.

The final place is 1984 - a small bar, open Friday, Saturday, Sunday. Not my sort of place but it is quite popular, so give it a go if the other two pubs are not your style.

Compared to Preston, Warrington and Crewe, this is an excellent selection of places which should meet most appetites and tastes. Google them to check opening times etc

Enjoy!

Carlisle. There is a Costa in the square outside the front entrance if that's your thing. Drink in or takeaway.

Brilliant round up. May have to try the Station Cafe next time I'm about.

Harrys Bar Cafe - over the road from Acton Mainline Station.
Very friendly staff and reasonable prices, small but 'cosy'.
My last visit there was pre-covid and before the new station was finished - anyone here visited recently?
