Not valid on Northern services AFAIK although I"ve had one accepted when there was disruption, which is probably true for both operators. When NYMR first ran to Whitby the tickets were interavailable, but apparently this led to complaints from customers who caught the school train out of Whitby which is not exactly a heritage experience.
