Seriously? You don't see how someone who's had their ticket checked en route, has put it away, is juggling heavy suitcases and and a couple of kids, being faced with a queue to exit the platform, and having to stop and fish everything out again sees it as a big inconvenience?

Revenue protection should always be balanced against customer service. And, like it or not, multiple ticket checks, and particularly barriers on long-distance services where you're likely to have luggage, are an inconvenience.

How come it works at other stations then? And even at Waverley with FSR passengers from Inverness/ Aberdeen etc and their luggage?

Anyone on a journey should expect their tickets to be checked, rather than tucking them away at the bottom of the suitcase.

I've never heard a complaint about an RPI from someone whose ticket was valid...

You will find a number of such complaints on this forum alone if you look. One particular instance involving a FCC RPI was attracting many posts a day not that long ago.

Indeed, I imagine that the majority of passengers are pleased when there are frequent ticket checks both on and off the train, as few people seem to be delighted when they think others have not paid their fare!

Anyway, barriers shouldn't be that much of a surprise, most guards, at least in this area, remind passengers to have their tickets ready when announcing arrival at a barriered station.

But not on railway stations in Scotland it would seem. Spent the day in the Glasgow area yesterday and at almost every station other than Glasgow Central there were people openly smoking, in many cases in full view of staff who said nothing. The air in Ayr was particularly smokey.

Welcome to civilisation - you are only supposed to smoke in areas not under a canopy so the disturbance to yourself should be minimal. :p
