On the naughty step again.
Well, as no-one else seems to have mentioned it...........
Happy St. George's day to you all and happy 454th birthday to William Shakespeare - still the best selling author of fiction of all time.

Another planet...
Not only Shakespeare's birthday, but also the anniversary of his death. Guess at least it saved his family a few groats on the memorial notices in Ye Olde Stratford Gazette...

As for St. George: an early Palestinian Christian (who may or may not have existed) who never set foot in England and was claimed to have killed a creature which definitely didn't exist, and was then posthumously lauded in the name of a sky-fairy whose existence is also a matter of opinion...

Though even the existence of Shakespeare is questioned by some!

But, if it gets us another bank-holiday (as Corbyn of all people wishes to do) then I'm all for it!

Well as May has two bank holidays it would be easy enough to shift the one that Corbyn's lot introduced back to the nearest Monday to April 23rd.

Happy to see others mentioning the significance of today. For me, it's attaining three score years and ten without going completely gaga. Wasn't looking forward to today, but now it's upon me I'm grateful to still be alive. Just glad I wasn't christened George!

Plenty of countries celebrate May Day as a holiday. What’s wrong with having a day for workers of the world?

Be vary wary of politicians who offer free stuff and other goodies like extra days off. There is always a sting in the tail.

Many happy returns!

On the subject of birthdays, as well as Shakespeare as noted above, it’s also the birthday of the newborn 5th in line to the throne, and is always a memorable day for me as it’s my mum’s birthday.

You have a few years on two of the three! :D

EDIT: in response to @Busaholic

No such thing as a free lunch. Someone has to pay. A socialist will tell you company profits will be reduced and dividends reduced accordingly.

Fine, but that doesn't cover the state sector which has three choices, 1. increased efficiency, 2. lower pay or 3. higher prices. I can only assume that if 1. was achievable it would have been done with or without an extra bank holiday so take your pick between 2. and 3.

Thank you to the kind gentlemen who wished me a Happy Birthday, which I had. I'm neither a royalist nor a republican, being almost profoundly uninterested in royal matters, but I did hear the new sprog's birth weight and it coincided to the ounce with my own exactly seventy years previously!
