I was on the 1810 XCT to Bournemouth which was running to time for a change, while the SWT down slow to Portsmouth was around 15 mins late. On some other occasions the XCT train has been stuck behind the slow, leading to delays by Southampton.
Yesterday the signaller brought the (down) XCT train into the (up) platform 3 and allowed it to get away smartly and pass the slow before Battledown. There's often a lot of criticism from passengers but that was smart work from the signaller and this passenger much appreciated it!

Ah last night - Mostly caused by power supply problems to Woking Signalling Centre - And it did lead to a few anomalies, including the 18:37 FGW service to Reading departing from Platform 4 as opposed to the usual 5 (still not as rare as platform 1 though!)

Does priority usually get given to the main operator in the area as to which service is pathed first in this case basingstoke being swt territory would the cross country be held or is it up to the signaller.

Signallers are supposed to minimise OVERALL delay, irrespective of operator.

It probably used to be the case that an express train running late would get priority over a slow local train which was on time. These days it isn't so clear cut in the world of delay attribution.

Yes absolutely right. Vertical integration is a bit of a worry for us XCT users always in someone else's patch! And I have definite evidence of FGW being given undue priority at Reading over XCT which sometimes seems to be regarded as nuisance getting in the way of those nice HSTs.
But credit where it's due - the Basingstoke signalling team seem to be very switched on and on the ball and I wanted to let them know that it is noticed and appreciated!
