"Ban on filming in British Courts to be lifted"

Later in the article -

"John Battle, head of compliance at ITN said the reform would bring England and Wales into line with many other countries, INCLUDING SCOTLAND, where cameras have been allowed in courts under limited circumstances for nearly TWENTY YEARS" (my capitals).

If even a quality newspaper is coming out with headlines like this , what hope is there for us who live beyond the M25

What do you propose that could fit in that space then? 'Ban on filming in Courts to be lifted' is just as inaccurate...

Then you don't run with it. I'd prefer the ban was upheld until the media could prove themselves responsible and accurate (in other words banned forever)

Ban on filming in courts in England and Wales to be lifted - or Ban on filming in English Courts to be lifted (Wales has the same legal system) so you could probably get away with that.:p

Quality is a measure of greatness, not an indicator of it ;) How 'quality' is it?

Too long and inaccurate respectively.

Seems to me you're just starting another thread to complain over trivial topics that not many people are greatly up in arms about.

Accuracy is the main responsibility of a free press. If your headline is not accurate you do not print it. Simples

Of course it goes without saying our press is not free. It's free politically but it's at the mercy of it's economic backers.

Believe me trivial is not the appropriate expression in relation to this. The headline intimates that England equates to Britain which is one of the fundamental flaws that stokes the fires of Nationalism.

I would hazard a guess that a lot of people in England are probably unaware that Scotland has a seperate legal system. The same sort of media headlines were present in the recent Sunday Trading Olympics matter.

The courts in which the ban operates are in Britain, hence British. The headline and story appear to be accurate. Or do we have to have some disclaimer about Scotland every time a general point is made?

Not every time , but when you are talking about an entirely different legal system yes. The only truly "British" Court is the Supreme Court in London which replaced The House of Lords as the final arbiter for The Scottish Judiciary.

Sounds about right to be. If it brings them into line with Scotland then it does release the ban on "British courts"; perhaps a better less ambiguous line might be:

"John Battle, head of compliance at ITN said the reform would bring England and Wales into line with many other countries, as well as Scotland, where cameras have been allowed in courts under limited circumstances for nearly twenty years."

Same length but doesn't imply Scotland is seperate from Britain (assuming that's the point you were making, sorry if it's not).

It was the headline "British Courts" which implies all the courts in Britain being contradicted by the text which points out in fact it is just courts in England and Wales.

Nope. This is a non-gripe. British courts implies all British courts, including Scottish, where the ban has already been lifted. The lifting of the ban being extended to England and Wales now means all courts in Britain, aka British courts, including Scotland, no contradiction, merely elaboration. So its not just the courts in England and Wales, its Scotland too, but they lifted it earlier.
