Great stuff, but the return routing implied here is Tonbridge - Orpington - VIC - [LUL] - Charing Cross - Lewisham.

So the Maltese Cross permits LUL travel but how come there is such a weird route in the ticketing system?

It's not unreasonable to want to travel via London

Therefore the permitted routes from origin to London and from London to destination are all permitted routes.

I don't see anything weird here.

AIUI it's because travel via London is special. Rather than working on the normal system of a map or series of maps, a "LONDON" route allows you to combine a route (not sure offhand if it has to be a mapped route or if any permitted route is ok) from your origin to London with one from London to your destination.

Presumably this was done to simplify the system, given that many origins have multiple reasonable routes to London and many destinations have multiple resonable routes from London I'd imagine if enumerated explicitly the list of routes could quickly explode.

Often the journey planner will suggest a change at London Bridge because none of the Tonbridge services call at Lewisham normally.

It wouldn't give you a Tonbridge - Orpington - Lewisham? Often times one part of the route is closed for engineering works so perhaps the routing is amended accordingly?

Depends whether that combination will be overtaken. Given that some Tonbridge to London Bridge trains don't call at Orpington it will often be quicker to go via London.

Connections at Orpington and Sevenoaks line up a lot better for travel in the London direction such that you will be less likely to get offered a via London trip on the journey planner.

In general, there are numerous routes one might use to make this journey, including for example Tonbridge-Orpington-Bromley South-Victoria-Cannon Street-Lewisham; the beauty of the Routeing Guide is that one has the flexibility.
