Thanks, I guess they must be running top-and-tailed with extra vehicles for brake force then. (Sorry, I just can't get used to the idea that a train of coaches for use here in the UK has to run as an unfitted/piped block of vehicles... Maybe this is another reason why I (and others) wonder whether we shall ever have a smart railway again!)

It's s strange one, running with 5 unbraked vehicles together is a funny one. Group standards wants a working distributor every 80m when hauled in freight train or if not in freight train only allowed 3 non brakes isolsted together. This means that this should have a portable distributor to split the 125+m between working distributors.

The 397s aren't approved for use in service yet and as EMUs they probably weren't designed to be fully pneumatically / electrically compatible with locomotives. It might just be easier to treat a newly formed unit off the boat as an unpiped block than go through all the required approvals / safety hoops for a one off set of delivery moves.

It passed through Crewe earlier on, all centre cars are shrink wrapped. I wasn't that close but didn't notice a set number on it.

Can't believe it's still hot the rapping on again. Last time started to peel off and dangerously flap about, you can see on these photos that it's starting to peel in places again.

Gives a bad look for TPE and CAF for the units as they are delivered too

Why is it only on 3 carriages? And not the end cars?

Not really sure how it can be a bad look for TPE given that they've yet to accept the trains...

Possibly because internal access was required to couple the barrier coaches...

Is the reason known why the 397 hasn't run out of Crewe this week yet?

What are the arlington marked carriages, I assume that they are old NSE stock, are they just barrier vehicles or are they still driveable in some way shape or form?

They're barrier vehicles, converted (as you suspected) from old NSE stock (of Mk1 vintage). AIUI they are no longer driveable.

Thank You, I did wonder. I know they are based at Eastleigh which made me wonder if they could still be driven on the 3rd rail. I know that they converted some of the old Connex 508's to barriers however they swapped the cabs around so they faced eachother and blanked them off, these ones still looked like the cab windows were present.

I think they are old de-icing units because when you look inside they still have the bulk containers for Kilfrost or whatever they use.
