Awesome detective work sjpowermac. I will try and get a look in at the depot today. Is there a return working that you can see?

I’m afraid it’s showing as cancelled.

Disclaimer: Not sure if this is the right place for this...

I noticed this train scheduled yesterday - http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/N04539/2019/08/12/advanced I was on the 15:47 from YRK to SCA and it went past us... It didn't appear to be a class 68... Shortly after I got this photo from a mate, looks like it's a TPE 802?

Nice photo, the 47 looks good.
So just the 2 sets from Basford Hall, so i presume 1 left in the South Yard, unless moved.
Still a shame there going into storage as opposed into service.

Should have taken all three from Basford Hall, Unfortunately when the stock gets put together the pipes dont reach and I only had one set of pipe extensions so left set 1 at Basford Hall for another day. 830 needed a blow out (to much light engine running) so took her for a blast out as well.

Certainly looks good anyway. Always nice to see some classic traction.
At least you've now got another excuse for a blast with 830 taking set TP01 to Longtown sometime.

I did wonder how they would be piped together.

I didn't get a pic in passing, but a set in a kind of clingfilm was on MID tonight around 19:15 and stabled next to it was 47815 with barrier coaches 6330 6338 6340 6344.

It makes you wonder if these sets will ever be rebuilt and enter service. Rumours abound that TPE are now looking to retain most, if not all of the 185's. Without starting a "blame game" the mk. 5's have been a big disappointment. Passengers still rammed into overcrowded 185's three years after the 68/mk.5's were announced, and with no timescale whatsoever for their full introduction surely deserve better.

Am I correct in thinking that until today's move with set 08, all the moves after set 1 were just loco plus mk.5's, no barrier vehicles, but today's move reverted to top n tail locos plus barriers? I wonder why, if that is the case?

So the sets are going into storage as opposed to going into service?

Is training continuing or being given up on and will the sets ever carry passengers?

They seem functional enough, what is causing all the issues preventing them from actually running?

Well TPE have 3 or 4 sets handed over to them, so they must be fit for purpose, but i can't understand why TPE are not now using a couple of those sets on service/passenger trains while drivers are trained, this is common practice. There must be enough instructors and drivers trained up by now to run a limited Nova 3 service.

Maybe it's just incompetent TPE management making promises, that have helped make a mess of the whole debacle since refusing to use the Mk3 stock that was procured for the initial training use as well as much needed capacity.

The fact that sets are going into storage and i believe 1 on Longsight having given up parts to others, i just can't see the sets now in service before December and maybe not until next year.

    It's a shambolic situation!!

No. Sets 11 and 12 had barriers as well. I don't know about set 7 but as it was delivered between 11 and 12 it probably did as well.

The story appears to be that the sets are going into storage, not because they don't work, but because TPE simply hasn't got the resources to train drivers and guards on 3 types of new traction all at the same time.

The 397s need to be in traffic by December as the 350s are leaving.

The 802s need to be in traffic by December due to the Edinburgh service extensions and capacity enhancements.

Apparently there is only sufficient resource to train drivers and guards on 1 traction type at a time on the North Route side of things so something has to give. Priority has been given to the 802s so the training resource is being focussed on them. As stated elsewhere it is very difficult to put anything in to service until you have a good number of people trained up in the first place.

802s make sense to me. Shame the 5a stock is being stored for the time being but the whole project has run behind and therefore something had to give.

Could it be that the locos with the correct couplers were not available at the time.

Thanks for the update and clarification!

Totally agree, TPE does have to prioritise something I guess. Hopefully the 802's are in service soon! TPE seems to have a lot of staffing issues anyway, as every time I am at a station in Manchester I hear the announcement for a TPE cancellation...
This whole project will probably cast doubt on any future coaching stock in the future, not that it was likely anyway.

At least storage should keep the units reasonably fresh and stop them from being worn out before use. Hopefully there isn't further graffiti on them as well lol. By the time these sets come into service, they should probably consider looking at replacements due to them being life expired.

If they don't have capacity, then I don't understand why the 802s are being given priority in order to facilitate service extensions.

Dealing with the chronic overcrowding that the mk5as were procured for should be more a priority than expanding their services, and if services are expanded surely this will only further reduce staff availability.

Have TPE recruited more drivers in recent months?

If the 802s can go into service quickly, there are almost enough spare 185s such that you could work all Scarborough to Liverpool services with 2 185s and the Manchester Airport to Middlesborough services with 2 185s west of York.

So getting all 802s working is just as useful as getting some of the Mk5s and some of the 802s working. If it is quicker to get 802s in before Mk5s would have been then you deal with overcrowding sooner.

They poached a lot from ScotRail, which has caused problems here.

Sets are going into storage because staff training is concentrating on the 802 and 397 fleet for now.

There will be Mk5A’s entering traffic soon but at a slower pace. Expect them to come into service at a faster rate after Christmas.

Between now and then it’ll be a maximum of 4 sets in use when they do start off.

Should be one set first for 4 weeks, then 2 sets for 10 weeks then 4 sets from December timetable change.

    Have faith!

Which means a current planned introduction date of w/c 9th September. So much for these trains will enter service in the summer.

I have annual leave w/c 09 Sep albeit not until the Wednesday - could be an opportunity to experience the "new car smell" on a Northern England train!
