Does anyone know when we can expect to see consistent working of 802s on the LIV-EDI and MAN-NCL services? Or will we see 185s operating those routes for a while yet?

There aren't enough 802s (19) to cover all the possible diagrams (10 LIV-EDB / 7 MIA-NCL) with maintenance cover so one Manchester Airport to Newcastle diagram has to remain 185 anyway.

In particular, there is a swap at Manchester Airport scheduled between the North TPE and South TPE routes that necessitates the use of a 185 on the incoming service from Newcastle that goes out to Cleethorpes:

That should be 6-car under normal circumstances as it was promised that all South TPE services would be 6 as from December '19. Naturally it wasn't fully implemented.

Well, obviously not because the 185s were needed to cover non-availability of the new fleets. In any case, isn't the strengthening to 6-car on TPE only meant to be from Piccadilly to Cleethorpes?

Supposed to be all TPE services operated by 185 to be doubled up. Additional 185s are being kept on to provide sufficient units

According to a post on the TPE facebook page yesterday the last unit - 802811? has been released from Eastleigh and all sets are now in full livery.

Current operations and the cross-scheduling at Manchester Airport. 17 from 19 seems plausible but it would also seem tight. Are you indicating that, at some point they will schedule 17 from 19?

It's certainly do-able. It will be the case with the 397's and 68/Mk5a's, but that's for another thread.

It's doable now when the fleet is new, and that's all the current franchise really cares about.

Right, but it isn't going to happen without a timetable change from what is currently in place for that seventh diagram with the 185 swap at Manchester Airport.

17 out of 19 gives a ~10% spare which is sufficient.

At some point when normality returns there will be a fair increase in numbers of double 185 workings so I’d expect to see some change in the way they interwork between the south, Hull and stoppers.

I agree about Chat Moss, most of the way from Manchester to Newton-le-Willows is 75mph, with a 60 mph limit at the Glazebury level Crossing. The lack of line speed increases is probably due to the boggy nature of the Chat Moss route increasing the likelihood of subsidence, hence the use of Goalpost portals for the OHLE. In the height of austerity there likely wasn't enough funding to upgrade the line speed and signalling.

Its a shame as the line is as straight as the ECML north of York, so a 125 mph line speed limit could otherwise have been implemented which the 802s could take advantage of.
*Astley level crossing

The Chat Moss is a truly horrific stretch of line. Manchester Victoria - Leeds is fine in my opinion.
Chat Moss is fine

I always felt that crossing Chat Moss in a 319 was a bit like crossing the channel in a bath tub.

Chat Moss is great compared to pre electrification when you travelled on 142/150/156.
As far as signalling is concerned the line from Rainhill to Astley is I think still controlled from Warrington PSB. The only box taken out with electrification was Huyton.
