They were a separate order from the Regional Railways fleet, modifications were specified by Thailand Railways from the get-go. They weren't diverted from the BR order. The Siemens stock are broadly similar to the GB 360s but again were never planned to be sent here. They were just a follow-on from the British order. Both Desiro fleets were indeed built in Krefeld, Germany.

Astonishing that the country that invented railways has to import them from Canada, the U.S., Germany, Spain, Japan. It's almost laughable if it wasn't so tragic.

Which rolling stock used in Britain was built in the US or Canada? I'm aware of Bombardier owning the former BR works in Derby, CDPQ's involvement in Eurostar and OTPP's involvement in the Channel Tunnel but not aware of any trains built in Canada or the US being used in Britain.

Not going to be built in the UK but Trenitalia in Italy has been holding a competition for three large regional train orders which attracted 12 bidders.

Lot 1 for 150 medium capacity trains with minimum 200 seats has been won by Alstom
Lot 2 for 450 high capacity trains with minimum 450 each has been won by Hitachi Italy
Lot 3 for diesel trains has been provisionally won by Stadler but Trenitalia has decided to do further evaluation of the bid.

Total of the tree lots €4⋅5bn

That should fill the Italian factory order books up in the short-medium term.

Weren't the class 66s - I think they're 66s, the ones that were originally built for Foster-Yeoman - built in Canada as well as subsequent before then the production was moved to the U.S. ?

The first Class 59 batch was built somewhere in the USA, possibly Indiana. Production of 66's took place in London Ontario until that plant closed in 2012.

It was La Grange, Illinois (a suburb of Chicago) - EMD's headquarters.

They ceased loco assembly there and concentrated it at the London, Ontario plant in 1991, but diesel engines and electrical equipment are still produced at La Grange.

The Muncie, Indiana plant is a new, post-Caterpillar takeover, assembly facility. Caterpillar couldn't come to an agreement with the unions at London, so they closed it and opened a replacement at Muncie...
