How would you say traction training compares to the rules and regulations training? Would you say its more intensive? Much harder? Or Easier?
Probably less intensive these days.
Most modern trains are computer based and the companies that maintain them, like Siemens etc don't really want drivers fiddling with them too much and that is reflected in what TOCs teach these days. Some faults can also be remied by engineers remotely.
The main aim of traction training these days is vital equipment identification and the basics to keep going to a place where train can be removed from service.
The increase use of reliance on 'phone a friend' also means control centres would rather dispatch a fitter/engineer to the train than have a driver crawling around underneath.
The other issue is skill fade As trains have become more reliable, drivers often don't get much opportunity to put traction training into use.
