A couple I made up myself are:

Class 455 - Box Machine (because of it being a basic box with a motor)
Class 317 - High Speed Box (A rather fast EMU for a box!)

One thing I don't understand though, why does the VT 57s get called Ronnie's as well? I've seen somewhere saying its a Ronnie, thought its a normal VT 57/3... :s

Cheers,

James.

^ If that's the case, I have a few for class 320s. But I can't really repeat them on a public forum...

They have been mentioned, LilLoaf. ;)

Apparently '323's are known as "Badgers", anybody care to elaborate on the meaning?

I thought the 323's were called Darlics, no really sure why, something to do with the way they sound.

24/5/6/7: Rat

Really only 25s were called Rats, as there was so many of them, the 24s, 26s and 27s weren't so widespread. The 26s and 27s are McCromptons. Never really got the point of class 26s, why not build more 27s, or uprate the 26s??

The 26s and 27s were called McRats, as they were the Scottish versions of the 24s and 25s.

And the reason they are called rats is because there was hundreds of them, and they got everywhere!

McRat is a nasty Ned News nickname!! 24s went too early for most to have known them as mega common I guess.

Ones I use often are:
14 - ted
20 - wheelchair/wardrobe/bomb
25 - rat
31 - goyle/ped
37 - syphon
40 - bucket
47 - duff/spoon/spoon menace
50 - dob
56 - grid

86 - rancid can (only really 86'1 or 86'2, not so anti- '4s and '6s)
90 - skoda/general abuse

390 - whatever is the current swear word of choice!!!

I know COR/GRI/RES/BUF were Nelsons and 442/444/460 are Wessies/Arkwrights/Vaders but what about all the other SR units? Apart from the DEMUs, did any others get nicknames, or were they just BILs, REPs, HAPs, CIGs etc?

Can't believe you've all missed a few.

Cl20: Queers (always going around in pairs).
Cl31: Brians (boring, also Brian the Snail from Magic Roundabout). Gary's (same derivation as Goyle - Ugly - Gargoyle - Gary Goyle - Gary or Goyle).
Cl60: Politician (can see right through them).
Cl91: Dung Beetle (from the apparent likeness to the said insect caused by the high pan).
Cl92: Electro-Tug (electric Cl60).
C153: Mini-Cab (size of small-end cab plus the number of seats available).
Cl319: Bi's (from bi-sexual, because they are AC/DC).
Cl360: Doodlebug (send across to London by the Germans and prone to going "bang"). U-Boat (German in origin and prone to sinking in service).

Loads for class 20s (if not mentioned already): Queers (as said in last post), rollerskates (for the same reason), razor blades, whistling wardrobes, H-Bombs, wheelchairs, Moose (especially when running non-cab end first), choppers...

Cl153's were the original Scuds because of their resemblance to the Scud missile's mobile launch vehicle, their generally cheap design and their (in)ability to hit the target. However, the name seems to have spread and is now generally applied more widely to almost any unpopular class of train.

I have also come up with a few through the last last year and they are.

92's = blowers (because of the overwhelming sounds coming from the loco)
323's = Caterpillars (because of their former livery)
390's = Bendolinios
321's = yawners (I swear they yawn out of stations makes me yawn great units though)

Apparently in the magazine I have with the nicknames, it said 158s were scuds after these Iraq bombs, which were apparently unreliable, as was the 158s when they entered service.

I've no idea what they were like, but that's what it says...
