Good morning

I watched episode two of the current TV drama Sherwood last night. There is a scene where the character played by Adeel Akhtar is driving a train and an arrow shatters the window in the cab.

The train used in the scenes appears to be possibly a redundant two coach unit (maybe a Pacer!) in the former Arriva green colour. However, the TV company have created a fictional TOC called 'Greater Midland' on the side.

I can't quite be sure if this is a former Northern or TfW unit being used for TV purposes. The scenes take place along a single track route in a rural area. Again any ideas as to the possible location?

The series is supposed to be set in Nottinghamshire, but the scenes of Alun Armstrong's home/murder where filmed in Gin Pit village near Tyldesley, just outside Manchester (which is not far from where I'm from).

The unit is ex-Northern 144009, and the scenes were filmed on the East Lancashire Railway where the unit is currently based.

There are some photos of the unit operating in its fictional livery here:

Thanks for that.

Its been quite a good drama so far, although I felt the train scenes where a little unrealistic - Adeel Acktar is communicating directly with the passengers while he is driving a train. Surely, real life would see a Conductor on board doing this role? Then the later scenes where the police characters seem to wander around a railway line without some kind of assistance from specialist NR personnel. I suppose that's TV dramas for you!

I thought much the same. Also, the train seemed to be going at maybe 30mph when the arrow hit the window, he made an emergency stop and got out and seemed to find the arrow very quickly - not sure a Pacer would have stopped quite so quickly in real life

Would it have been permitted to go above 25mph for filming purposes on the ELR? Surely it's more likely that it just looked faster than it was. 60mph+ on a Pacer always did feel faster after all!

Depending on what else was going on (I haven't watched the programme), maybe the film was sped up a bit for dramatic effect?

I haven't seen it either, but was aware of the 25mph limit on almost all preserved lines. Certainly for a film maker, the smart way to get around the 25mph restriction would be to speed up the footage after the fact, rather than trying to get permission to run at a higher speed.

Given the absence of a Guard when it all kicked off I have to assume this was a DOO operated Pacer service  And supposedly on the Robin Hood Line too.
