It appears that Indian Railways are beginning a programme to ditch generator cars on long distance trains. Luggage vans will also be reduced in number. Their place in the rakes will be given over to General 2nd Class seated vehicles.
Coupled with this, a new system offering reservation in General seating is being tested in Delhi. As always in India, it is a quite complicated process, involving photographs and a linked WhatsApp account. However, hopes are that the process, along with the additional capacity, will reduce the mad scramble for seats and help combat ticketless travel
