Hi there,

Does anyone have any info on what training as a trainee train driver is like? What are the hours like and do you have A/L, or is the A/L already set as I’ve heard it can be?

Edit: Also how far in advance do you get your schedule?

Thanks!

On my recent one - they assigned you a block leave, that you got to take. Not much chance for A/L unfortunately. Once you enter handling hours it becomes much easier, but the initial stages, not really happening.

Mine was 9-4, but most days wouldn't last until the actual time. It's pretty intensive with a lot of exams and papers to sit - so you have to study quite a bit, but as long as you keep up it's pretty intuitive.

It all depends on your group! Good group, good time, bad group, bad time! Luck of the draw!

The structure is broadly the same across the board but how it's laid out will vary according to the needs of individual operators. At my TOC some leave is built into the syllabus and the plan is handed out to the class at the beginning of the course. The classroom part is Monday to Friday 09:00 to around 16:00. Things become more fluid once you are passed to your depot for the practical handling element of the course where you will be working trains with your Instructor on their normal rostered turns. How easy leave is to arrange during that part of your training is down to the policies of your employer.
