As it's that time of year (and it was snowing yesterday), here is some video from back in 2001 when we were on a trip through Boston, New York and New England.

First up is an Amtrak 'Vermonter' calling at Waterbury, Vermont, top-and-tailed by F40PH #414 and #226. After a Hi-Rail interlude, we move to Rowley, Massachusetts for an MBTA train from Newburyport, pushed by a GP40MC.

About a month after this video was recorded, Amtrak F40PH #414 was involved in a collision at Syracuse and probably never ran again.

We certainly had plenty of snow on that trip - in New York on the day before New Years Eve we experienced a major snowstorm complete with thunder and lightning...and the snow in Stowe (just up the road from Waterbury) was waist deep, as we found out the hard way :D

A few from Trondheim, Norway back in January 2014.

Looking north over the freight yard in the early morning winter light:

A train for the north waits at Trondheim station in the early morning. The train is headed by an NSB Di 4 diesel locomotive (built by Henschel in 1980, powered by an EMD V16-645 engine, with AC-traction equipment from Brown-Boveri). There are only 5 in use, and are NSB's only mainline diesels.

On the freight side, a Vossloh-built CargoNet Euro 4000 diesel arrived with a train from the south:

This far north at that time of year the sun doesn't rise above the horizon, but you get fabulous, long-lasting, dawns and dusks...this was taken from a Hurtigruten ferry/cruise ship:
