    Good Morning

i was thinking in the summer of taking myself and my two train mad children trainspotting at my local station of Basingstoke, or Reading as its busier.

Do i need to apply with the station for some sort of licence? Havent a clue what to do or how to do it etc

    Thanks for your time

Well you certainly don't need a license! But if you're planning on spending some time there, it doesn't hurt to make yourself known to the staff, and they'll know what you're about.
If you're not traveling your could ask for a platform ticket and see what they have to say.

I have on occasions informed staff, especially if it is a small station and I am taking photos and plan to be there a while, otherwise I have never bothered. On bigger stations trainspotters are a common sight and something staff take for granted, but use your own judgment and if you feel it would be appropriate then it is a nice courtesy.

As Blinkbonny says nothing is needed to go watch trains, however if the station has ticket barriers then go to the ticket office and ask for a platform ticket for each of you, they are very inexpensive.

Children watching trains is infectious especially if they have a little knowledge they get so excited at many of the things we take for granted, it’s a great hobby and a lovely way to pass an hour or two, have fun.
