I know that Wales has TrawsCymru long-distance bus services; what about Scotland? Supposing Scotland had its own long-distance bus network. Which routes would it have?

I would start with a stopping Perth-Inverness service via Dunkeld, Blair Atholl, Dalwhinnie, Newtonmore and Tomatin. This would get rid of the current Citylink shuttle service situation and help the Edinburgh/Glasgow-Inverness services to run more efficiently.

As for new routes, then how about Inverness-Carrbridge-Grantown-Tomintoul-Banchory-Aberdeen? Or Inverness-Inverness Airport-Nairn-Grantown-Aviemore-Kincraig-Kingussie? Or Nairn-Inverness Airport-Inverness-Aviemore-Kingussie-Dalwhinnie-Laggan-Tulloch-Spean Bridge-Fort William? What suggestions do you guys have?

I would say the following could be useful:

1, Stranraer-Dumfries-Hawick-Edinburgh.

2, Oban-Fort William-Inverness-Thurso.

3, Dundee-Brechin-Aberdeen-Peterhead-Fraserburgh-Banff-Elgin-Inverness.

4, Stirling-Glenrothes-St Andrews-Dundee.

Whether or not they are viable is another matter but they would greatly help people get around.
Northern Ireland's bus network is worth some research I suggest.

One of the bigger gaps is Tayside to the West Highlands where you have to go up to Inverness or down to Glasgow. It's a pity we can't define some routes as 'national' and subsidise them nationally as we do with rail.

There did, and it was Route 973 and then citylink axed it the council only paid for it for a year, or was it the other way around?

If the government had the millions to spend on these services, that would largely carry fresh air - (there's a good reason why they don't currently exist!) - then they would be far better investing it to help avoid many of the cuts that LA's are having to make due to ack of funds.

Many of the suggested services have been tried by operators without subsidy, and few carried any significant numbers. Some others, would simply abstract passengers from similar commercial services operating on sections of the suggested routes, which would likely lead to cut backs, and the potential for funding being required where it isn't currently.

One gap is no bus service from Glasgow to the Borders!
One route id like to go on is Glasgow to skye , around 7 hours and a long breakin Fort William .
