I am planning a trip to the Isle of Wight and the National Rail website is giving me a connection time of 8 minutes between train and ferry at Portsmouth Harbour. Is this realistic?

Yes it is. You may wish to alight from the very front of the train.

As Yorkie says alight from the front of the train, however it is not unknown for more than one train to occupy one platform if this is the case, continue on pass the parked unit to the buffer stops and then on to the concourse, where there is a ramp down to the pier, don't use the footbridge!
