What is the purpose of these movements?

5C51 Central (1508) to Carstairs (1537) then the return 5D92 Carstairs (1607) to Central (1645)

Are these to free capacity at Central? Although these working don't seem to be activated to run some day.

TIA.

That would be my guess, they want to keep the stock at Glasgow to run the 5pm Manchester train but do not want to block platform 1, the main avanti platform for 2 hours.

If this is correct, a little surprising that there's not anywhere nearer to "park up"; it must be almost a 60 mile round trip for the TPE unit to journey out to Carstairs and back into Central again.

No free sidings available at Polmadie for an hour or so?

Polmadie can't normally be used during the daytime. Quite a few depots that are like that.

The moves simply exist to make the current reduced timetable work (platform 1 is used by 2 Avanti services in between), together with unit diagram rotation etc.

It's certainly a little wasteful of unit miles (and electricity) but it's the least worst option for the time being.

@Watershed, thanks for the explanation. No doubt if Polmadie had been available, it would have been used.

Still quite a round trip. Almost as far as a trip from Manchester to Preston and back!

It's a route retention trip. Sometimes it goes via the diversion routes around Glasgow such as Rutherglen or Holytown and it's marked on the Drivers docket as such.

Alternative route compared with the normal Glasgow Central -> Manchester routeing which normally passes through Carstairs anyway?

Via Bellshill and Holytown rather than Motherwell perhaps?

Carstairs is as far as it needs to go. The diversion routes are between Law Junction and Glasgow. Sometimes it will run main line via Motherwell and Shieldmuir but other times it may run via Holytown or even Whifflet. It depends on the needs of the Driver.

I've noticed TPE have been using P1 at Glasgow Central more often recently. Do wonder when and if we will get full service back?

It's a while away. 397 reliability will need to seriously improve before the full service can resume, the MTIN is still quite low (and is slightly inflated compared to other fleets, simply because of the high mileage nature of their work). There are also crewing considerations.
