Apologies if this already exists or is in the wrong place, mods feel free to move.

I used to do a lot of trips out by public transport years ago, with journey planners like traveline being invaluable for generating a printed intinerary.

I assume these days there are far better apps and websites out there for use with a modern smartphone - I've heard of citymapper for example and know Google maps does journey planning but I'd be interested to see what others recommend or suggest for a day out tripping around!

If I want to quickly check a journey, I’ll use TheTrainLine. But that’s where my use of TTL stops, as I wouldn’t recommend using it to buy tickets as you’ll end up paying more than buying off a TOC website.

I always have RealTimeTrains open too and Traksy. RTT I use to keep track of progress and I’ll use it to see how long my train is/where my coach is (for select operators), and I’ll use Traksy to check what platform we’re due in on/what the hold up is.

I use Citimapper for an instant plan to get me from A to B. To plan future Trips I use Google maps. For Tickets I have found the best prices is generally Train Pal.

If you are also interested in bus journeys, I find the UK Bus Checker App useful to see full bus routes, where all the stops are, times at stops etc..
It also has a current location button on the map.

For a travel itinerary, with train journeys, flights, hotels, meetings etc. I use TripIt. I like this as I can forward booking information by email. It then extracts the information. It works fairly well for a lot of common providers, although it does have a US focus, and doesn't work for everything. Its a good check to make sure that I have things booked for the correct dates. Its a good way to make sure that you have the correct address for a hotel. If you just turn up at your destination and search for a "Travelodge" in Google Maps, you will sometimes get directions to the wrong one.

For train information, I have bookmarked links to www.traintimes.org.uk which is good either for a specific journey like https://traintimes.org.uk/manchester/edinburgh or for departures at a station like https://traintimes.org.uk/live/KGX

For advice on travel in a specific location, I like searching at www.wikivoyage.org which will often have useful tips. Its particularly useful for working out how to get from a random European city from the nearest city. Sometimes Google maps will get the right answer, but it doesn't always index bus services. www.rome2rio.com is also good for ideas on how to get from place to place. Sometimes the suggestions will be for infrequent services, but its a useful source of ideas.
