I will be travelling from St Albans City to Barnes Bridge today. NRE offers an 'Off Peak Day Return' ticket at £16.80 that has the usual not before 09:29 and not between 16:29 & 19:02 peak restrictions on the MML. Normally I would travel to Blackfriars and walk to Waterloo, but today I will be carrying something and I would rather limit the walking (especially as it might rain!) by staying on TL to London Bridge and doubling back to Waterloo East. If somebody here could help with a couple of questions please:
1) does this ticket allow travel via London Bridge? (I normally have a travelcard which would be OK for this diversion)
2) will I have any problems at the Waterloo East gateline?
Thanks in anticipation for any advice.

Yes, that's perfectly valid. Whilst you do pass twice over the section of line from Metropolitan Jn to London Bridge, there aren't any intermediate stations so it's not considered a doubleback for routeing purposes. Even then, doublebacks are sometimes allowed at intermediate station groups for interchange purposes... but we don't have to consider that in this case!

It seems an intuitively reasonable route so I see no reason why you'd have any difficulties at Waterloo East or Waterloo.

If you search on the National Rail planner with via Waterloo East, it will return itineraries via London Bridge in this way. Looks like you could also go via London Bridge, Peckham Rye and Clapham Junction, but nowhere near as easy!

Thanks, - I wasn't planning on a south London tour but it's useful to know. :)
