Hi,

I occasionally travel from Reading to East Croydon, via the North Downs Line to Redhill, and then changing onto Thameslink. I return to Redhill the same day.

The following day I travel from Redhill to Reading.

So far, my inelegant solution is an e-ticket open return from Reading to Redhill. At Redhill I exit the station, and then buy a paper day return from Redhill to East Croydon. Of course, this is not time efficient as I often miss the Thameslink connection.

Is there a better solution? preferably paperless.

An Off-Peak Return from Reading to East Croydon, route via Redhill, costs the same as from Reading to Redhill. No need to pay extra for an additional ticket. This would be the best solution unless you need to travel between 04:30 and 09:29 (when that ticket would not be valid).

Unfortunately it's not available as an e-ticket but you may be able to get it loaded onto a smartcard depending on where you buy it.

Even if you did want to stick with buying multiple tickets, why wouldn't you buy your ticket from Redhill to East Croydon at the same time as your ticket from Reading to Redhill? Seems to make no sense to leave the station to buy another ticket when you can buy or collect them perfectly well at Reading.

Is an open return actually valid though, as i am splitting my return journey over 2 days?

I am travelling from A to B, B to C, C to B on one day, and then B to A on the next day.

Yes. The return portion is valid for a month and you can break your journey (for multiple days or even weeks if you like) along the way.

You are asking if you can break your return journey overnight when using an Off Peak Return (SVR)? Yes, you can.

By the way, it's much easier to understand if we avoid using algebra. I don't like algebra ;)
