The map of the 360A/360C (on the recent thread about its demise) showed it passing three different Tescos around Coventry.

That got me thinking - how many bus* routes pass at least three different stores of the same shop?

Locally, the outbound First SY 95 passes four Sainsburys in under two miles (Sheffield High Street, Glossop Road by the University tram stop, Winter Street and Barber Road).

Maybe there should be a category for "Supermarkets" and one for "non-Supermarkets" (given how many small branches the bigger supermarket chains now have)?

Which route passes the most McDonalds/ Wetherspoons/ Poundlands?

For arguments sake, say the bus has to pass within around fifty metres or so?

(* - i.e. not coach, probably not limited stop routes either)

In London route E6 between Greenford and Bulls Bridge Tesco serves 4 branches: an Express at Greenford station, a Metro at Greenford Broadway and Extras at Yeading and Bulls Bridge. From there the H28 provides a. Link to the Extra at Osterley

Nowhere near enough to a Pacer :(
Another category could potentially be for rural or semi suburban routes which can often serve multiple post offices and their associated general stores as they go along

Lothian country buses 104 Haddington Edinburgh passes 2 ASDAs within 20 minutes, as does the competing First X8

many Edinburgh City Centre buses pass by or near 3 mcdonalds within 5 minutes with some passing at least one more on their route

Lothian services 25 and 49 pass 2 spoons within 10 minutes and a number of services which come up Leith Walk and then head towards Newington pass 3 Pizza Huts and a Pizza Express

Do buses count if they run direct but change number?
If so certain Brigg to Cleethorpes extended 450/5s manage 3 Tescos.

The 123 in London passes 4 Tescos - 2 smaller ones in Walthamstow, a larger one near Charlie Browns and a small shop in Ilford. In former times it also passed the Tottenham one on w/b journeys.

I dare say there are zillions of other examples in London given the spread of smaller Tesco stores these days.

I can think of one Tesco in London that has no buses passing it - the Tesco Metro in Covent Garden. :D Several routes are a stroll away on the Strand / Charing Cross Rd.

The 701 from Bluewater to Rainham is no more, but it used to pass four Tesco stores in the Medway Towns - Darnley Road Express, Strood Town Centre, Chatham Town Centre (store now closed), and so-called Gillingham (on the A2 near Rainham).

This is going to be most routes in any decent sized town + Tesco, isn't it?

I think both C1 and C3 in Cambridge go past 6.

In the old days the X5 from Oxford to Cambridge was remarkable for the percentage of stops that were at Tescos; it was limited stop and didn't go into very many town centres, so several towns were served by the stops at their Tescos.

The Huddersfield Free Town Bus passes pretty close to 2 different Subway stores, despite the entire route taking place in little over one square mile*. It also serves at least 3 branches of Greggs, possibly 4!

*=not including the loop to Kirklees College/Folly Hall, which is technically a separate route although buses alternate between the two.

Another non-Tesco contender, the 268A Bradford to Wakefield. Branches in Bradford city centre (if it's still there), Heckmondwike, Wakefield Dewsbury Road and Wakefield Ridings Centre.

The 63 in Birmingham passes 4 branches of Sainsbury's including three full sized supermarkets (Longbridge, Northfield, Selly Oak, Selly Oak Local), 4 branches of Tesco Express and 3 branches of Aldi (Northfield, Selly Oak, Edgbaston).

The 10 in London passes Waterstones branches at Kensington High Street, Oxford Street and Tottenham Court Road. And because of the one-way system on the way back it passes Gower Street, too. (And if you were feeling generous you could include Hatchards St Pancras as that's also owned by Waterstones.) The 14 passes Putney, Hatchards Piccadilly, Waterstones Piccadilly and then the same TCR/Gower Street vibe. (And yes, I work for Waterstones and now am trying to think of more.)

Any bus on Newport Pagnell High Street passes 2 Co-ops at the same time as they are virtually opposite each other. The Arriva 2 then passes the third Newport Pagnell Co-op (twice) on the way to Milton Keynes.

How are we defining pass, if a store's address is High Street does the bus have to drive along High Street or can it drive along Market Street where the store on High Street is visible?

There must be a number of bus routes in Huddersfield which go past both the Market Street Sainsburys and the Shorehead Sainsburys. Do any of them continue to other towns where they serve more Sainsburys en route?

Although, Sainsburys must be an easy one if you include the local stores.

The number 1 from Weymouth to Portland passes 4 co-op's (Weston, Easton, Fortuneswell, Wyke Regis) and 2 dominoes (but only when going wey -> port).

On it's previous route via the town bridge it passed 5 co-op's (although there is a possibility that the 5th was a spar at the time).

The Stagecoach Coastliner 700 from Portsmouth to Brighton, described in great detail here, passes near to the following branches of Iceland:

  • Central Portsmouth
  • North End
  • Havant
  • Chichester
  • Bognor Regis
  • Littlehampton
  • Rustington
  • West Worthing
  • Worthing
  • Portslade

The Hove and Brighton branches are also within walking distance of the route, but it doesn't run right past them.

Arriva route 436 (Woking - Weybridge) manages two ASDAs, two Sainsbury's and two Waitroses, plus a Tesco, a Co-op, M&S, a Morrisons, and a Budgens and a Londis!

No Lidl or Aldi yet though.

Is there no longer one on Fulham Road? It was one of the originals, certainly the first one I ever visited.

Arriva Southend route 9 passes directly outside two Wimpy bars, in Shoeburyness and Rayleigh, and outside a shopping centre, in Southend, that has one inside. It also misses another branch, on Southend seafront, by a matter of metres. Other Southend-area bus routes may have similar claims...

Route 82 in London passes three full-size branches of Waitrose, all in fact on the same road (Finchley Road/Regents Park Road), at North Finchley, Temple Fortune and Swiss Cottage.

Re: Huddersfield Sainsburys, the only ones that could would be 231/232 to Wakefield, which only counts if the Wakefield Trinity Walk store is considered close enough to the bus station. Unless there's a small Sainsburys in Horbury (can't recall if there is). The Shorehead store is passed by the 370/372 which also serves the store at Salendine Nook, but they don't serve Market Street.

Don't you now require three separate buses to make the journey? Trying to find out from the Travelline SE website quoted told me to take a train for the complete journey!

Not surprised, at 4.5 hours for the complete journey!

3 sections now, as you say:
  • Brighton - Littlehampton / Arundel
  • Littlehampton - Chichester
  • Bognor Regis (Flansham Park) - Portsmouth

All, confusingly, numbered 700.

Not any more - if you're thinking of the one on Old Brompton Road that was the first ever but it's not there any more. Not sure we've ever had one on Fulham Road but it's possible.

This will basically include all London buses

Every route passing through "The City" seems to pass at leat a dozen Starbucks!

Very niche thread!

:)

London bus 199 passes at least four Wetherspoons - Surrey Quays, Greenwich, Lewisham and Catford.

The most I can think of in Sheffield are:

First 52a: Bankers Draft, Swim Inn and Rawson Spring
First 81/82: Sheaf Island, Bankers Draft and Rawson Spring

(the old First 75 used to link the Woodseats Palace, Bankers Draft and Wagon & Horses but it no longer serves Chapletown where the Wagon & Horses is... I can't think of anything round here that served four though... )

That's a great snapshot of the economic differences

On the subject of bellwether retailers, the 40/41 and 120 services in Sheffield pass three Poundlands on their way from Arundel Gate to Manor Top.
