How do you define "busiest"?

As this thread is in this forum I'm guessing you're after total train movements, or perhaps total passenger train movements?

Also how do you define "Scotrail stations"?

Do you mean Scotrail managed stations (ie, not Dunbar, Glasgow Central, Edinburgh Waverley, Carlisle) or Scotrail served stations? (ie, including the above)

I'll also edit the thread title to comply with this Forum Rule...;)

  • If posting a thread requesting a list of examples of a specific, or combination of characteristics, you should start the thread title with "Trivia:".

If you include any station served by ScotRail then Carlisle and Newcastle must be up there.

If you include the fast lines at Newton then I am sure that must be up there as well.

Probably, but it's vague.

The ORR station usage figures for 2013/14 give the top five stations by passenger journeys in Scotland as:

1) Glasgow Central - 27.1m
2) Edinburgh Waverley - 20m
3) Glasgow Queen Street - 17.7m
4) Paisley Gilmour Street - 3.9m
5) Aberdeen - 3.6m

Paisley is not in Glasgow and I would say it is probably the best answer to this question.

Aren't they both in Glasgow? OP said not Glasgow or Edinburgh. I guess him being so vague with his question doesn't really help, I mean if we can say Partick can we also say Haymarket?

Paisley Gilmour St is definitely in Paisley and not Glasgow. :)

Dunbar is SR-managed now isn't it? There are footnotes for example in VTEC's charter saying it was to be transferred by the end of June.

No idea; I was just going by the so-called "definitive source of customer information " http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/stations/DUN/details.html "Managed by Virgin Trains East Coast"

Yep, it transferred to Scotrail on the 1st July. National Rail obviously hasn't been updated yet.

That only leaves 3 stations in Scotland not managed by Scotrail. Edinburgh Waverley and Glasgow Central which are Network Rail managed stations and Glasgow Prestwick Airport railway station which is owned by the airport and therefore these days by the Scottish Government via its ownership of Prestwick Aviation Holdings Limited.

Haymarket, although in Edinburgh, is another one.

Also, Dunbar, Musselburgh and all stations between them, all on Glasgow-Carstairs (especially Newton), Slateford-Kirknewton and Lockerbie would all have to be up there too. Plus the stations between Glasgow Central and Paisley Gilmour Street.

Confirms my suspicion that the answer was Glasgow Queen St.
