I've seen a 59 get a red just west of Westbury station coming up from the quarries and then be unable to get it moving again. Westbury had to send a 47 down to assist it up to the station where it was removed. (the 47 that is)

Purely to avoid this issue, but allegedly the climb from Moorfields to Sandhills is so steep that there is a standing instruction that trains can only be given a green aspect from Moorfields so that they get the benefit of a full run up at linespeed. The line climbs up from the tunnel portal below street level and has to climb high enough to clear a street level tunnel portal for a disused line in just over 200 meters, though it should be said most of the tunnel is also a decent incline....

There have been a few mentions of running back down a slope and having another go. How does this work with signalling, points etc?

Permission to "set back" would be required from the signaller, would be dependent on a number of things also such as the distance required, catch points or level crossings.

Which station would drivers think the worst for being at a standstill in the station and then a steep gradient immediately after?

Took me 45 mins to get a 456 up the hill from North Dulwich to Tulse Hill once in leaffall.

Last year a pair of 456s got stuck at Bagshot, which is situated in a bit of a valley, with uphill climbs in both directions from the station. For the rest of the day no 456s (or possibly all trains) stopped there, because of the risk of getting stuck again.

Do all freight trains going up the Lickey incline get the assistance of a banker or is it just when either the driver requests it or the train weight is above a certain amount?
