What is the longest route in terms of time between two neighbouring towns? I'll start with First Manchester's 350 service which takes 1 hour and a half to go from Ashton to Oldham. The towns are only 4 miles apart.

Pass on towns but Perth to Durban neighbour each other and that quote a few miles over the ocean but are neighbours. Must have a few sea front towns in those cities.

On a different scale of journey length, Melbourne (Australia) route 903 might be in with a shout.

It links Mordialloc and Altona (two Melbourne suburbs 17 miles apart as the crow flies) taking up to 4.5 hours for its 226 stops.

I'm not sure I'd describe towns 18 miles apart, with 5 rail stations between them, as neighbouring.

It doesn't run any more I think, but a couple of years ago Yorkshire Tiger had a Huddersfield to Brighouse service which took a very long-winded route, having initially left Huddersfield in completely the wrong direction.

The 379 Bristol to Bath service takes 2 hours for a 15 minute train journey thanks to it's lengthy route through NES , and almost double the time of the x39

Partick to Govan 90 service. It isn't intended for end to end use but does a near 2 hour journey only to terminate 850 metres across the river.

For comparison, there is a direct link between Partick and Govan on the Glasgow Subway (a one stop journey beneath the river) which takes just two minutes.

The 11A/11C in Birmingham take two hours to get back to exactly where they started.

There are a few in West Yorkshire that take a long time- the 660 takes 72 minutes from Baildon to Bradford.

I have done that route end to end. There are a few very long routes in Melbourne.

219 Barnsley to Doncaster 1hour 50 minutes via the back roads.
80 Sheffield to Chesterfield over 1hour & 55 minutes via a very long way round.

In West Lothian, Bathgate and Livingston are about 4.5 miles apart as the crow flies. Tendered service 31, operated by SD Travel, takes 1 hour 26 minutes to make a circuitous journey between the two towns, via Linlithgow.

Not anymore…the services were split a while back to try and improve reliability
Yes if you head out of Acocks Green out to the Erdington 11C terminus you'd probably have something like a 2 hour journey time still. Head out on the 11A 30 odd minutes. The Western side does a longer route overlapping with the Eastern route to.

You can also go from Birmingham to Solihull the fast way on the X2 taking about 45 minutes. Or on the X12 taking you through Bromford, Smiths Wood, Chelmsley, Birmingham Business Park, Birmingham Airport and Damsonwood first taking over 90 minutes.
