Like some of us I keep a record of the National Rail stations which I've used. Sometimes this happens organically, if I have a work or social trip, and sometimes I'll aim to tick off a station which I wasn't otherwise going to use. As of yesterday I've got through 398 and there are around 2550 altogether (plus I'm expecting a few more to be built during my lifetime).
The stations I've used are spread across most of the UK but some of the ones I haven't used are closer to home. I think my nearest unticked station is
Nunhead (about 2 miles as the crow flies from home) - although I've been through it many times, I've never boarded or alighted from a train there. The second closest is probably
South Bermondsey.
How about you?
I have been living in Cricklewood for 4 months and the nearest station I haven't been used (including before I moved to Cricklewood) is Dollis Hill, just 1.7 km from my home. In National Rail, it is Kensal Rise 2.6 km from my home. A use is defined as boarding or alighting a train or a rail replacement service there.
My usage count for the nearest stations (within 3 km) from my current home are:
Cricklewood (0.3 km): 83
Willesden Green (1.0 km): 10
Kilburn (1.4 km): 13
Brondesbury (1.7 km): 48
Dollis Hill (1.7 km): 0
Brondesbury Park (1.9 km): 1
Brent Cross (2.1 km): 0
West Hampstead Thameslink (2.0 km): 44
West Hampstead (Overground) (2.1 km): 40
West Hampstead (Underground) (2.2 km): 7
Golders Green (2.3 km): 0
Neasden (2.3 km): 3
Finchley Road & Frognal (2.4 km): 3
Kensal Rise (2.6 km): 0
Finchley Road (2.7 km): 15
Hampstead (2.7 km): 0
Kilburn High Road (2.8 km): 5
Queen's Park (2.8 km): 3
Kilburn Park (2.9 km): 0
Hendon (3.0 km): 1
Hendon Central (3.0 km): 3
While the count for Cricklewood - West Hampstead alone is already 39, i.e. nearly half of my travel from my home station is to the next station only, and nearly all travel from there is one stop back home.
The above statistics give me a lot of insight. It's normal to have the home station as the most used station. However, compare Kilburn and Willesden Green, the further one gets more usage from me, because it has a better bus connection and I tend to travel south on the Jubilee line. While on the North London Line, Brondesbury and West Hampstead give similar usage count, with Brondesbury a bit more. The connection to Brondesbury is by bus or bike while the connection to West Hampstead is by Thameslink, if travel is to the East they generally produce similar journey times if there is no excessive waiting, but as the Thameslink runs less frequent I now prefer to use Brondesbury more.
The closest 0 count is Dollis Hill, one stop from Willesden Green on the Jubilee.
However, what's more interesting is that the 2nd closest 0 count and the 3rd closest 0 count are both on the Northern Line, which are the 2 closest Northern Line station from my home. The reason is that I have never travelled in the Edgware direction, while travelling to the city, taking Thameslink to Kentish Town for the Northern Line is a better option compared to using the closest stations. All the other 0 count within 3 km are located further away than non-0 count on the same line.
While in the year I lived in Bournemouth, I hadn't used the next station down the line, Pokesdown even once, just 2.8 km from my home! The reason was because taking a bus direct to get home from Pokesdown would be faster than taking a train and walk home. In contrast, I used Branksome 12 times to go shopping as it would be much faster than taking the bus.
