Trivia - Obsolete Railway Terms still used

On the Merseyrail network, line are Up in the direction of Liverpool, except from a point just south of Hooton where it switches and becomes Up towards Chester.

Generally signal posts have even numbers if you are travelling Up and odd numbers travelling Down, although there will probably be a long list of places that are the exception to the rule.

I assume that - historically - Chester to Birkenhead Woodside would have been Down [from Paddington!], and Rock Ferry to Liverpool Up. I wonder if R Ferry to Hooton became Down rather than Up when they electrified and extended to Hooton? Why they didn't do the same when they electrified to Chester is unclear.
