The Caledonian Sleeper takes you the furthest from London. Where does the shortest service from London terminate? Train services only thanks.

There's services in the evenings that only run from King's Cross to Finsbury Park.

There's two tonight at 2335 and 2350.

Paddington - Greenford is 9m01c and is probably the shortest regular service (ignoring circular routes).

There used to be some Liverpool Street - Ilford peak workings (7m29c) but these no longer run.

There is a London Bridge to Tulse Hill service on weekday morning and there may have been the odd London Bridge to South Bermondsey football special.

Were there any Cannon St-London Br workings before the works started? There was an offpeak shuttle a few years back.
Blackfriars or Victoria to Herne Hill would have been the next shortest on the SR.

Whilst it's technically the wrong way round...

2R01 0456 Balham - London Victoria was once just in passenger service from Clapham Junction, IIRC. I know there certainly used to be a Clapham Junction - London Victoria service around that time, as recently as about 3 or 4 months ago, but that appears to have disappeared, and seems to start back at Balham now. I think the headcode and timings are the same from Clapham Jn. The logic was that the stock (5R01) could be sent from Selhurst Depot via Norwood Junction or Selhurst and so it was only practical to start it at one or the other, rather than further towards Croydon. Likewise its staff stop at Battersea Park has never been advertised to enable it to use the Battersea Reversible avoider instead (where crew knowledge permits, which isn't exactly always the case nowadays...).

What about the trains that went from Cannon Street to Charing Cross during engineering works? When I did one on a Sunday to clear the curve, I was astonished at how packed it was.

The question doesn't seem to state that the service must originate from the London Terminal. As a result there are many short journies allowed:

London Bridge to Cannon Street
Liverpool Street to Aldgate
Paddington to Edgware Road
Cannon Street to Tower Hill
