Sunderland, I forget the numbering, but the down platform is built over a previous running line.
Ditto Brough & Hessle on the same lineGilberdyke. Clearly formerly four track, with platforms by the outer lines. Now two track, with new shorter platforms built over the former outer lines. The old platfirms remain behind the current ones.
There was a pair of fully signalled running loops in that area, plus a pair of double-ended sidings with just ground signals to the east of those. Were there any running lines in the area where the new platform pair at cambridge was built or was it just sidings?
The old S/b platform at Olympia is still intact and could easily be brought back into use. The "new" platform is much shorter than the origional although it is now longer than when it was first put in (only about two coaches)One of the platforms at Kensington (Olympia)
Additionally the old westbound track. For a less silly example, on the Underground, Whitechapel's middle pair of lines were paved over to make one grand island platform in 2010.
The platforms at Crossflatts were built on the former goods lines, Apperley Bridge and Kirkstall Forge are also partially built on land where the extra two tracks were.
I think the high numbered platforms at Leeds were also built on the site of goods lines and sidings.
Huddersfield platform 1 (extended outwards over the former up line in the late 1980s).
Mirfield platform 3 appears to be partly over the site of previous sidings.
The concourse between the two tracks was the site of a bay platform that was too short to be used by most trains. The current Circle Line "station" at Kings Cross St Pancras has its concourse built over the former running lines to give more space
Deighton station is built on 4-track formation roughly where Kirkburton branch started. The formation will get its own back when Deighton station has to be moved when the main line is re-4tracked!
It is being rebuilt.Forgot about Deighton. But is it being rebuilt, or will the new railway run south of the existing station?
https://consultations.networkrail.c...ase-2/supporting_documents/Station boards.pdf (another large file, won't let me copy a quote)We’re proposing to deliver an improved station in the Deighton locality, either in the existing location of the station, or a location circa 400m to the west, along the Birkby-Bradley Greenway. The new station will provide step-free access, a new station forecourt with three blue badge parking bays and longer platforms.
I'd forgotten about the new bay platforms that were built between the two stations. I think you're right that the current platform 4 was added in the 60s rebuilding and possibly even 5 was added at the same time.Platforms 2 & 3 are on Wellington's old coach sidings. What is now P4 was built as the new P1 in 1967, I think that was sidings as well (on the 'New' station).

Yeah, that is interesting and helps to understand the platform numbering before the rebuilding. The image on this web page shows what the layout of the platforms was before the rebuilding which is helpfully taken after the train shed has been removed.I found this on a thread on a different subject on a different forum. What are now P5 & P6 used to be P7 & P8 before 1967. Didn't realise that what is now 8 used to be a bay. Which I had the next page to this image!
