Very surprised that Radley hasn't been mentioned - it is the closest station to Abingdon, which is a much larger town. However it's probably for the best the station isn't named with a "for" - through tickets to Abingdon are valid via Oxford or Didcot only!

Dalmeny (for South Queensferry) or more accurately South Queensferry (for Dalmeny)

There is no South Queensferry merely Queensferry. We need no adjective as we were here first. An old school local here would take you to task and you could be permanently haunted by the ghosts of the previous "Burry Men" if you persist in the above blasphemy. Joking aside up until quite recently the use of the unmentionable adjective would result in an Amish style shunning and you would be forced to go to Edinburgh for your daily needs as the local shops wouldn't serve you. Now there are no local shops.

This is true, but calling it Queensferry, barely solves the problem that is calling it Dalmeny, it isn't obvious to non-locals which station gets them to the place they want to go.

Houston and Crosslee on the Kilmacolm line wasn't actually in either place, but was in Brookfield.

On the same line and on a similar note: Corkerhill station is actually in Mosspark, and Mosspark station (which used to be Mosspark West, despite there never having been another Mosspark station) is actually in South Cardonald.

Staying in the Greater Glasgow area, Holytown station is in New Stevenston, and neighbouring Carfin is arguably in Newarthill - there's also a reasonable argument that it's in something of what was referred to in the Vietnam War era as a "de-militarised zone" between the two. If you've ever been there, you'll understand.

Allerton station and West Allerton stations always confused me as Allerton was actually in Garston and West Allerton is located on the western edge of Allerton but is technically on the eastern edge of Cressington, or maybe the southern edge of Mossley hill.

I suppose they solved the Allerton station problem when they renamed it
