A few more bay platforms which wouldn't really be missed:

Rugby

Rugby's single bay platform is occasionally useful, indeed it's being used right now for a Crewe-Euston train that had to terminate short on its northbound journey.

Northampton - has 3 through platforms and the 2 north facing bays which are rarely used.

Bletchley - currently has 6 platforms, soon to be 8......
One of the bays at Northampton are normally used by the hourly Northampton - Birmingham service

Another planet...
Huddersfield certainly could do with more platforms - very little flexibility there. It will be better after TRU.
P5 is unused currently due to Casvegas being served by a bus, peak only. It only takes a single 150 so isn't the most useful.

After TRU, Huddersfield will have the same six platforms it has now, but without the missing numbers. It will be a bit more flexible with more through platforms though.

Norwood Junction. It has 3 southbound platforms, but only 2 northbound. It also has one with abandoned disused track, and another that shares the track with Platform 1.
Norwood Junction needs another up direction platform. All platforms at Norwood Junction are defintley very much needed.

All these platforms are needed. Unless you want a situation when there are engineering works on the slows, no trains can stop at any of these stations as there are no platforms on the fasts.

Id say Blackpool North needs all 6 platforms - it has 4 departures an hour 5 with Avanti every couple of hours over a 2 track railway to preston -
The suburban side of London Waterloo handles (or did pre-covid) 18 departures per hour from 5 platforms over a 2 track railway. Although not always reliably!

When was the last time the island platforms at N Malden or Esher were used? As far as I know, the platforms at New Malden are locked out of service and not even maintained any more.

Yes, when there's a GC in the station.
But surely would still only need 3 max?

Except they keep the information screens on and working

The thread title says "need for regular service", so platforms that are not needed for regular service would seem to count, even if they are very useful during times of (planned or unplanned) disruption.

Also a slight difference in that most of the stock there can interwork, so the turnarounds can be shorter and during disruption you can easily change what works what. Whereas obviously you can't interwork a Pendolino and 150!

Only since LNW messed up the timetable such that Northampton has remarkably ended up with ridiculously unevenly spaced departures both north and south as well.....

A sensible timetable could be run with only 3 platforms.

Exeter Central platform one (bay) has no booked trains, though is used sometimes during engineering possessions or disruption.

still is very useful for turning trains if there is a severe delay on the single line.

Wigan North Western possibly another one with 6, when Warrington Bank Quay (very similar service pattern) manages with 4.

Wigan North Western now only has 5 platforms since platform 2 was closed to allow platform 3 to be lengthened.

The only platform that's arguably surplus to requirements is platform 1 (which has approach control for the 10mph turnout), but even this sees some use to allow trains to be looped.

Platform 3 is needed to allow the Leeds terminator to run into the station without conflicting with WCML traffic; platform 6 is needed for equivalent purposes by the Liverpool terminator.

Warrington Bank Quay doesn't strictly need 4 platforms and could mostly make do with just 2 on the Fast Lines. However having more gives additional flexibility when timetabling.

Well there are often cases at BQ where both southbound platforms (p1 and p2) are occupied, such as right now:
16:39ChesterOn time
16:40London EustonOn time

Yes, but what I'm saying is that it would still work with fewer platforms. It without just require things to be juggled around a little. The same can't be said for Wigan.

I see what you're saying but I'm not sure.

You couldn't dependably move the Manchester and Chester services into the inner platform faces on the fast lines as you suggest, when those are often used for non-stop fasts.

It would be better to close the platform faces on the fast lines and run stopping WCML trains into platforms 1 and 4, scheduling the Manchester and Chester services around them.

All passenger services (except the Sleepers) stop at Warrington so I'm not quite sure what you mean?

Church Fenton has 4 which seems excessive
They're certainly not all needed at the same time, but you would have to limit it to having services to either Leeds or Selby/Hull (like Ulleskelf) to reduce the number of platforms.
