Ely is the only one of the three-letter stations/towns to have won the international final of Jeux Sans Frontieres.

Ely's proudest moment, although the cathedral runs it a close second.

And yes there are other three letter stations, but Ely still looks shorter than those listed, provided you use the same font.

London, Surrey... bit of a blur round here...
I'll open the bidding with NEWQUAY for 72 points. (1+1+4+10+1+1+4 and 50 points for using all seven tiles)
Remember that proper nouns are disallowed in Scrabble, so it would have to be an actual word as well. That said, University is the only one I can think of immediately, but only 66 scored (1 + 1 + 1 + 4 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 4 + 50), and three of the letters would have to already be on the board...

--- ---

IBM is the only station that identically matches it's three letter code, and is the only station that is entirely capitalised (which makes the first fact valid!).

Trivial correction, but Reading wasnt two stations, Southern was separate.
But Victoria was, and arguably London Bridge as well.

Class 321 units still use bells for communication - they might be the only units to do so in everyday service

Many electric units do - Classes 375, 377 and 455 included. I believe there may be exceptions where diesels use bells and electrics use buzzers; they were mentioned somewhere on this forum before, I think.

There we go! There's probably others but the only one I can think of is Bowling near Bradford, but that's been closed for quite a while...

There are loads of acceptable Scrabble words as station names, but I can't think of any high-scoring ones.

Eg. Bat [&] Ball, Rye, Ash... not forgetting the Bowling which still exists in Scotland...

Using one, either or both words in the station, these are the higher ones I could find:

university - 16
barking - 14
clock house - 13 + 8
elephant & castle - 13 + 8
exhibition centre - 22 + 8
hazel grove - 17 + 9
heath high level - 11 + 11 + 9
heath low level - 11 + 6 + 9
imperial wharf - 11 + 14
jewellery quarter - 22 + 16
quakers yard - 20 + 8
sandwich - 17
strawberry hill - 18 + 7

What is par for the length of a station name?

If only there were stations called Birdie, Eagle and Albatross.

If you only take national rail stations then, including spaces:

Length Count
3 11
4 33
5 92
6 178
7 274
8 331
9 278
10 287
11 196
12 164
13 147
14 95
15 96
16 81
17 64
18 61
19 31
20 30
21 31
22 23
23 18
24 11
25 7
26 3
27 4
31 1
36 1

The modal length is 8, the mean length is 10.74, the median length is 10 (Dove Holes / Dovercourt).

If you include London Underground and DLR:

Length Count
3 11
4 36
5 96
6 189
7 297
8 356
9 304
10 317
11 225
12 201
13 190
14 115
15 112
16 93
17 73
18 62
19 33
20 32
21 34
22 27
23 20
24 13
25 7
26 4
27 4
31 1
33 1
36 1

The mode is still 8, the mean is now 10.84 amd the median is still 10 (Hartlepool / Hathersage).

The rules of scrabble were changed over 5 years ago to allow proper nouns.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8604625.stm

BBC News said:
Proper nouns come into play in Scrabble rule change

The rules of word game Scrabble are being changed for the first time in its history to allow the use of proper nouns, games company Mattel has said.

Place names, people's names and company names or brands will now count.

Mattel, which brings out a new version of the game containing amended rules in July, hopes the change will encourage younger people to play.

The official station name is Llanfairpwll.
Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch wouldn't fit on the board. Even if it did, surely we'd use the Welsh Scrabble tile scores? ;)

I think Waterloo East is the only station to have a platform C or D

The Manchester Metrolink uses letters rather than numbers and I think Victoria has a C and D although that isn't National Rail.

I thought of that song too but decided not to mention it, since there isn't a 'Paisley' station and Leeds Central closed in 1967.

I always thought they were singing about Leith Central, of Trainspotting fame and more likely for a Hue & Cry song, but I've checked the lyrics and indeed it's Leeds Central. I think it's called artistic licence!

Oh yes it would...

I double checked before posting and just calling it James Street is valid...
