Not sure if this has been asked before but what regular scheduled service is booked to call at the most stations ?
I was thinking maybe a Heart of Wales line service that extends to stations beyond Swansea but with the large number of request stops it may not actually call at that many of them.

The Sunday Portsmouth Harbour - Brighton services call at 28 stations.

It gets asked every year or so. As well as the obvious XC service already mentioned, SWT also have a weekday 0612 Waterloo to Weymouth with 42 calls.

What usually happens now is that people suggest services with numbers of calls in the mid 20s or 30s for about 6 more pages...

I was thinking of extending it more along the lines of a 'rest of the world' answer (Mосква - Владивосток maybe ?) or along historical lines when there were more stops on the mainlines - or how long would it take to travel the route of the train with most stops by getting off at each one consecutively and continuing the journey by the following train.

Quite a long time. For Aberdeen to Penzance it's 15:00 by the time you've gotten to Dundee!

The longest (time) journey answer for the last part in UK is probably Stockport to Stalybridge - not many stops, but wait one week at each intermediate station, so 3 weeks + about 20 minutes.

If were including all railways, then as suggested on last years thread, Cockfoster to Cockfoster via Heathrow Terminal 4 has 72 Stops.

I'm not convinced that counts as one service. Doesn't the trip number increment at one of the Heathrow stations? (Maybe Heathrow Terminals 1,2,3)

It increases at Terminal 4.

At least my suggestion of Upminster - Richmond - Upminster has the backing of realtimetrains ;), but by LU standards, that is not one journey either.

Historically, I don't have every timetable that has ever existed, but a few I have spotted:
GWR 1902 reprint. There was a Su service from Chester to Paddington which called at most stations as far as Reading, a total of 60 stations. The timetable does not make it clear, but it may possibly have originated at Birkenhead Woodside, which would increase the number to 71 stations.

I also found a Su Bristol - Paddington calling at 57 stations. Sunday seemed to be the best day for such happenings - on weekdays the stopping services often ran in sections, with express or semi-fast services covering the longer through journeys.

On the GCR (1903 reprint), a Su most stations from Manchester London Road to Cleethorpes served a mere 45 stations. There could be greater totals elsewhere - if anyone has the timetables and time to search them all.

45 stations for Aberdeen to Penzance

As a Brighton guard a few years back, a double Pompey all stops both ways was akin to some sort of mental & physical torture

How about the highest density of stops, for example the Crosscountry service from Penzance to Aberdeen might have the most stops with 45, but takes pretty much all day to get from A to B?

Stops per hour

I imagine some of the Valley lines would be quite high on this... Bridgend - Aberdare has 24 stops (I believe) and takes about 2 hours which is 12 stops an hour or 1 stop every 5 minutes.

If we're talking about the long distance ones, I have no clue.

For "most stops per hour", how about Moorgate to Hertford North with 18 stops in 50 mins, or Stratford to Clapham Junction with 22 in 63 mins. So 21 per hour on both of those.

Cathcart Circle is 12 in 30 minutes (including Glasgow Central twice).
