Hi

Regarding this:

Code:
PASS 08:24 6T22 IMINGORET 07:47 SANTONOBP 08:45 WTT SX

Does SX mean Saturday or Sunday excluded?

Hail All! <D
On the subject of these rail information systems, could someone please fill me in on the basics? I'm pretty much a n00b when it comes to railway technology beyond the basic wheels, brakes, motors, engines, and BVE/MTS stuff. I wouldn't mind learning a bit more about the whole thing, if only to allow me to plan ahead and keep myself updated on service information during rail journeys! :)

So far, I have guessed the following:
TOPS: A train (Signal?) operating system that gives the short code and location of every rail vehicle on the UK rail network, except maybe for the CTRL. The system that gives us all of those cryptic yet usable route codes such as 1A14.
TRUST: A train running information and update system that is constantly kept up-to-date by automatic messages received from the signalling system. Most likely the data backbone for internet, concourse and platform based passenger information systems.
(If there are more similar systems on NR, I havn't heard of them yet.)

Also: How would I go about accessing these systems and the information within them? It would be very handy to know as I could run the TOPS and/or TRUST clients on one of my home PCs and use that to determine useful train running information before departing for my local station! 8)
For example: If I was meeting a friend at Farnborough Main, off of the train for Portsmouth Harbour (Via Eastleigh) that left Waterloo at 16:09, I would assume that the train would arrive at Farnborough at 16:45 as per the timetable. If I was able to check TOPS from my PC to see where the train is though, I would know to delay my journey to the station when I see my friends train get diverted via Staines and Addlestone due to a power failure or whatever on the South Coast Main Line! :)

Farewell, and thanks for any information ye can provide! <D

Hi David! <D
Cheers for the links to those topics...I have read those sometime before, but your post will save me a lot of searching the archived threads! Cheers for that! :)

Reading the information from TOPS and TRUST isn't a problem for me as most of it is pretty self explanatory. However - What I'd like to find out is if there is any way that I can connect to and download the information from these databases? :)
Having seen these systems (Or at least TOPS) in use at mainline stations, I can tell that it's all terminal based and thus designed for downloading via a modem or similar device. What I need to know is the access number/I.P. address/Hostname/whatever that I would have to connect to to find this information!

Just to see if I've got the basics of it, here's a couple of fictitious TRUST entries (With fictitious station codes!) from the depths of my own mind. Do you think they'd ever come in popular on the various main lines as high-speed commuter services? ;)
Code:
C:\>TRUST /S:FRNBRMAIN /C:3
TRUST - Trains due through Farnborough Main (FRNBRMAIN):

17:35.01 17:35.03 1S25 LONEUSTON 17:15 GLASGWCEN 17:45 VWC SX
17:42.53 17:42.53 1L90 CARDIFCEN 17:30 LONWATLOO 17:45 SWT SX
17:42.56 17:42.57 1A31 PENZANCEM 17:40 ABERDEENM 18:05 ATW SuX

Farewell, and cheers again! <D

Trust isn't available to the public as it can contain commercially sensitive information etc
If you wanted to check the progress of your friends train, you could use the various facilities available through National Rail enquiries website

Death: There actually used to be a Cardiff to London Waterloo service (albeit Wales & West, not SWT), however it was non-stop Basingstoke to Woking. We did used to have the advantage of a Basingstoke to Stratford/Colchester/Ipswich/Norwich service (that ran via Woking/Staines/North London) though!

As for gaining access, it is (as Slash said) for use by certain railway employees only however if there was a particular train you wanted the timings of, there used to be a forum member who could get you them.

Nat,
Not sure if your aware but somebody who works for another TOC alledgedly got in to serious trouble for something he posted on this forum.
Being a sailor unless we declare war on network rail I'm pretty safe. We have found out recently however why we have to provide an armed guard for the Network Rail Apprentices :)

Have heard stories about people getting into trobule, but there are so many websites, gen lists, forums with TOPs/TRUST info on where the posters are easily traceable. Management are said to have nothing better to do than monitor these things......

Hail All! <D
On the subject of TRUST and TOPS data, I have an idea for something that might save us a lot of time when creating routes in BVE. To help me with this, I'll need a FULL diagram of a service, complete with all headers, notes and any other information that might be found in such a diagram. This would preferably be a long route with station "flybys" and calls, junction "flybys" and suchlike. :)

If someone could please obtain such diagrams from both TOPS and TRUST for exactly the same service (So that I can see the differences between header and service layout etc.) then I would be very greatful. As an example, an ideal route for what I have in mind would be a VWC service between Euston and Glasgow Central. 8)
Obviously, please only post service diagrams that do not contain any sensitive or other "not for public" information as what I have in mind would need to work on TOPS/TRUST information entered by the end user, aside from the fact that it would be posted in this forum! :)

If anyone could post this information (In this thread would probably be the best place.) then I would be able to start work on it. I will point out that this project will probably take a while to complete, but any information, updates, and beta versions that I come up with will be posted in a new thread (Along with this post) in the BVE trainsim section. :)

Please excuse my cross-posting of this message, but it's relevant to both TOPS/TRUST and BVE, and I would like to post this information where it will get the most exposure. Any questions or suggestions for this project should be posted in the BVE/Automatic route generator thread. 8)

Farewell...And thanks in advance for any information that you can give! <D
