Hi all,

This is a two part question about a trip I am making next month.

1. I am visiting Doncaster with a mate and have printed out a list from RTT of the trains passing/stopping there. The main concern is Freight. How can I find the correct headcodes for the services as they pass through?

2. What is the likelihood of seeing Class 70s on the day ?

I always manage to get good answers here so thanks in advance.

1. Not able to supply that information this week.

2. Fairly unlikely. Though i stand to be corrected.

Hi High Dyke,

1. Would a excel of the ones with no headcode help?

2. I've not seen one yet. Where do they operate ?

This year I have seen 3 class 70's there, one working and the other 2 as part of the consist of a freightliner hauled by a 66.

FWIW, although this is a little bit far from Doncaster, they are quite common on the Welsh Marches, certainly between Maindee junct (north of Newport) and Shrewsbury. Could you make it this far for a spotting trip? Even a journey to Crewe might be worthwhile if you are desperate to see one!

I've most commonly seen them working on the marches for the FLHH Portbury to Rugely / Fiddler's Ferry. They have also been seen on intermodals and infrastructure workings too...in fact a couple of months ago 70006 worked a single rake of 5 autoballasters, making a nice prototype for modelling purposes (if that's your thing).

Thanks Andy ... We're doing Donny this time but I will keep the Welsh Marches idea in mind if we take a trip out a little later in the year.

No problem, good luck with it, and I hope you see plenty of interesting moves!

So do I.

Neither my mate or I have been out and about on trains for years and so much has trains ... Where have all the locos (47, 37, 20 etc.) gone!!!!!

Hence we chose Donny for a change of some locos on freight, although on the ECML I usually only see Cl. 66s.

Freightmaster have a Doncaster freight timetable listing all the headcodes.

S Yorks, usually
Not a million miles from Doncaster, you sometimes get a 70 on the Dewsbury/Hope cement, which passes through Swinton. Times vary though - some days booked around 0700ish, others around 1100.
