Tyne and Wear Metro: 4001, 4002, 4040 and 4083 Refurbishment

    I believe the "fleet refurbishment list" thread has now been closed so I have created a new thread as there has been some recent news on this topic.

    Between 2010 and 2015 86 out of 90 metrocars were refurbished at Wabtec Doncaster. This work included corrosion repair and interior modifications including improved wheelchair and pushchair access, two tone flooring and a new door closing tone. This refurbishment work has helped to extend the life of these metrocars and made them compliant to PRM regulations.

    4 metrocars, the two prototypes 4001 and 4002, in addition to 4040 and 4083 were never sent to Wabtec and never received this refurbishment. It was believed at the time that these metrocars would see only limited use for special events and at busy periods such as Christmas however this has not been the case. These unrefurbished metrocars did not have any corrosion or interior PRM work carried out.

    Reliability problems with the fleet, the time period until the new rolling stock arrives and also the upcoming PRM deadline, as unrefurbished metrocars do not meet PRM requirements, has meant that it has now been decided to refurbish these 4 metrocars. I do have some gaps in my knowledge of this but I will provide everything I know.

    The refurbishment is being carried out at Gosforth depot rather than Wabtec and will be slightly different to the Wabtec refurbishment. I do know that this refurbishment consists of door modifications and corrosion repair however I am unsure if there is any changes to the interior layout during the refurbishment.

    Metrocar 4040 has spent approximately 12 months having this work done at Gosforth depot. It has now returned to service and was seen today (August 8th 2019) operating the 18:03 from Pelaw to Benton. (I did not board myself but I am almost certain that this is the correct service). I did see them at the correct time at Four Lane Ends with Benton on the front.
    It now has the new black and yellow livery and was seen paired with 4083, which is yet to have any work carried out and is still in Emirates livery. If anyone has been on metrocar 4040 today or does so before I get the chance, it would be good to know what changes have occured to the interior. I do believe that this will be less extensive than the interior changes done by Wabtec.

    From what I understand, 4040 needed extensive corrosion repair done which explains the long time scale of work. I am unsure whether 4001 and 4002 have already had this work done or not. If this work has occurred, refurbishment of 4001 and 4002 may be quicker. 4083 has not yet has corrosion repair done so will take longer.

    With 4040 complete, I believe 4001 and 4002 are in progress with 4083 yet to start. I assume that these 4 metrocars will still only be able to operate with eachother after this work.

    If anyone knows anymore about this, it would be good to know. Do look out for 4040 and 4083 on peak services as it would be good to see the interior changes on 4040.

    I’m a little confused by this as I’ve not heard about this happening at all? Are we sure that they haven’t just been bottom of the priority list due to the lack of flexibility with these units and a large maintenance backlog (I’m sure there were +10 long term OOU units recently). Additionally a repaint could be explained by Emirates not sponsoring a car sitting in a depot for months.

    Do you have any details on what the modifications are?

    I don't have too many details at this stage, apologies. All I know is that the corrosion repairs are definitely being done and that the doors are being modified with the new door closing tone to meet PRM requirements. Unfortunately I don't have details on the interior modifications yet but I will be trying to catch up with 4040 now that I know it is back on the system.

    4040 has returned to service today working peak shorts with 4083, and I managed to get a ride on it earlier. Externally it carries the same livery as the refurbished units, leaving 4083 as the only unit not to have carried this livery. Internally, the doors have been repainted white, the floor in the door area is now the same style as the floor in the saloon area of the refurbished units, and the existing wheelchair areas have been expanded, with a new single seat replacing the previous double seat next to the wheelchair areas and the disabled call for aid buttons seen on the refurbished units have also been fitted - other than that it remains the same as previously. The door closing tones were the same as previously, they've not been changed to meet the PRM standards.

    In other news, long term absentee refurbished unit 4032 has also returned to service over the last few days - it was working on the Yellow line with 4016 today. I think that just leaves 4002, 4019, 4021, 4022 and 4075 as the only units that aren't currently operational now.

    Thanks for the photos! I'm assuming the two tone floor and expanded wheelchair space are for PRM reasons. I did think that the new door tone would be added but perhaps this will be done at a later date. Maybe this was not possibly today due to the pairing with 4083.

    Nice photos there. I'm surprised the black flooring has not been replaced with a new vinyl but all in all a decent attempt to get these cars DDA compliant so they can run on the system next year. The door tones surely will have to change so let's see if it gets added once 4002 has these works done as I guess the old ones has to be used whilst it's paired with 4083/4001. Also the door buttons on the prototypes are not DDA worthy so be interesting what type of buttons they will get.

    The white doors are an interesting concept, will certainly make the door buttons stand out more for the partially sighted but what state will they be in a years time, I think for that reassign, grey would be better but aa big improvement on the unpainted metal.

    With hindsight in mind, assuming the layout of 4040 is now as PRM compliant as the majority of the fleet, perhaps the original 3/4 life refurb should adopted the same seating layout? I'd imagine it would have saved a fair bit.

    It’s probably not fully compliant but will be for the purpose of a derogation. Not 100% sure though.

    Not sure the 3/4 refurb could’ve been done for much cheaper ;)

    Remind me, which unit was the one sat in a depot in Bristol for a long time? Is that one of the subjects of this thread?

    4022 is the scrapped car in Bristol. Being used for parts now.

    Probably not as easy as me suggesting it but it would have been interesting to see one of these units refurbished into the proposed LU style seating layout just to start getting commuters used to it.

    A lot of re-wiring and working of vents would be needed and these trains aren’t really intended to be running core diagrams.

    Has 4040/4083 been running on the system recently as I'll be up in Tyneside next week and hopefully I can manage to get a ride on 4040.

    Also looking at the photos of 4040, it looks too me the lights above the doors have not been replaced with the hustle alarm sounders that the refurb sets have nor there does not seem to be any on the interior of the train so looks like the old hustle alarm will remain. Be interesting too see when 4002 is done whether the door buttons has been modified or not.

    4040+4083 both running on peak services today. 4040 with the part refurb, 83 not refurb at all.

    Slightly off topic I know but I think noteworthy anyway is that 4019 has returned to service. This metrocar had been out of service for well over a year. Has also lost the old female voice announcements.

    In service today (18th) on yellow line. 9:30 Northumberland Park - St James.

    Might be my inner mild enthusiast but I love it when Retro Metro turns up.

    The dark atmospheric LED free passenger cab lighting, way more standing room, the buzz followed by the ruthless door slamming close mechanism, the old nsa. It’s just a bit nicer!

    Yep saw 4019 in service 2 weeks ago when i was up there on me travels, sadly did not observe 4040+4083 though.

    Only remains 4021 to return from long term absence, sounds like it's unlikely 4075 will ever return to service again if the reports of it being used as a 'Christmas tree' for the rest of the fleet is true.

    4040 has managed to evade me since it's return, was on Driver Traing one night 3/4 weeks ago, and heard it from the opposite platform at Central on Monday, not sounding the best.

    There is a photograph, taken on 16th October 2019, on wnxx.com of 4022 on a low-loader at the Nemesis Rail premises at Burton. Does anyone know why it has been moved from Barton Hill? Is it likely to end up back on Tyneside?

    Perhaps it is being returned to be disassembled for parts? Easier than needing a part and having to send all the way down to Bristol one part at a time.

    Last photo I saw on flickr of 4022, the door buttons have all been removed and the interior looking a bit of a mess from what I can see, so I'll guess if the door buttons have been placed back on, it might return to service, if not, then it will be heading for scrap eventually. 4075 is apparently getting robbed for spare parts, it's ashame we are unlikely to ever see any photos of it though.

    Metrocar 4075 as seen on Friday (18th October). They are not my photos, my friend recently took a visit with college and kindly let me share these over. If anyone’s interested he’s got photos of 4001 undergoing refurb too.

    Good photos there, Was your friend told why 4075 has been chosen for withdrawal?

    If hes happy for you to share, it will be great if you can upload pictures of 4001 undergoing corrosion and PRM work.

    Interesting photos there, definitely looks like 4075 won't be returning to service, or at least not any time soon anyway!

    If he's happy for you to share them I'd be interested to see the photos of 4001, or any other Metro unit there that's undergoing repairs or being used for spare parts :)

    Really interesting there to see what's happening with 4075, great photos! I wonder if there is a particular reason why that unit was chosen for parts removal? I imagine if there was a specific reason it would be related to reliability compared to other metrocars. It would be interesting to know if there are major differences in individual metrocar reliability and which metrocars are most / least reliable. I was wondering whether parts from 4022 may have been used to get 4075 back into service but that does look quite unlikely.

    Would also be great to see 4001 being refurbished! Does anyone know what is going on with 4002 also? I had heard that work had begun on 4002 when I made this original post so any update since then would be good. I imagine once either 4001 or 4002 are ready they will be paired with 4040 so that 4083 can begin this process.
