Really interesting there to see what's happening with 4075, great photos! I wonder if there is a particular reason why that unit was chosen for parts removal? I imagine if there was a specific reason it would be related to reliability compared to other metrocars. It would be interesting to know if there are major differences in individual metrocar reliability and which metrocars are most / least reliable. I was wondering whether parts from 4022 may have been used to get 4075 back into service but that does look quite unlikely.

Would also be great to see 4001 being refurbished! Does anyone know what is going on with 4002 also? I had heard that work had begun on 4002 when I made this original post so any update since then would be good. I imagine once either 4001 or 4002 are ready they will be paired with 4040 so that 4083 can begin this process.

In general terms it’s often the case that “Christmas tree” units don’t get specifically selected as such, it’s simply something which happens. Normally initially the case of a depot needing to meet its required output of units for a given day and having two defective units. A part gets robbed off one unit to let the other be made up to running order. With the robber unit remaining unavailable it doesn’t take long before the same scenario occurs again and more bits get taken - until such time as the depot have either the time or the means (i.e. availability of parts, which might be dictated by financial considerations) to get the original one going again.

4001 and 4002 are undergoing modifications to make them compliant with the accessibility regs as well as corrosion repair.4075 is out of service long term and is being used for parts - it's been out of service for 2 years if I recall, I wasn't there at the time but I believe it came in for a D exam and just never seen the light of day.4021 is also out of service long term.

Also, I think all “unrefurbished” units are to get new seating moquette, as seen here on 4083 during the visit.

Its amazing how much work seems to have to be done to strip the metrocars down and rebuild them again, the turn around of around 6 weeks at Wabtec is quite impressive to say the least.

It looks like 4001 is in the paintshop as it looks unfamiler from all the depot photos I have seen so hopefully it's not too far from being completed and it will be back in service soon enough.

I was impressed myself when I saw the photos, quite a lot of work put in.

It may be unrelated to 4001/02/40/83, but are there any confirmed photos of 4022’s move to Derby?

Have all four of these now been done, please?
I don't have all the details myself unfortunately, but no, they have not all been done yet.

To the best of my knowledge, 4040 is still the only completed of these 4. I have not seen 4040 on the system for a few months which may suggest that none of the other 3 are available to work with it if they are all in progress.

4001 is the furthest forward I believe. Another thread on here a couple of months ago had a picture of this unit in a special livery for the 40th anniversary. At the time, the doors were still missing.

4002 was seen on Look North last week on the news report about the new fleet. It looked fully in tact, with doors on although I'm not sure if this means they have not begun that yet.

4083, I'm not sure other than I know it has not been out for a while which may suggest work has begun.

Sorry this is all I have at the moment. Hopefully someone else can provide some more detailed info.

On the metro documentary tonight, you seen 4002 was in the process of the interior DDA mods being carried out(you could see the new flooring in the doors area for example) and that was recorded during the summer so in theory 4002 should be out on the system with 4040 but 4002 has been in the depot more than its been out on the system since late 2015 so obviously continuous issues with this unit. I imagine 4001 is all but done by now and 4083 will be in the process now hence It would seem no unrefurbished cars on the system at the moment.

4002 and 4040 are on 156 this afternoon
Yes, I'm on there now. 4002 has the white floor around the door area and doors painted white in the same way as 4040. Still original door buttons though on 4002.

Apparently Nexus did try and source complient door buttons for the prototypes but could not source any hence the buttons which has been there since the 80s(no doubt the individual buttons themselves have been replaced at times) are still in use.

No idea how the prototypes have been accepted as complient just on those door buttons alone, they are definately not touch sensitive!

I actually prefer the prototypes. They just feel nicer inside, much prefer the layout to the refurbed trains, even the seats feel comfier.

the violent shuddering shut of the doors is heart warming too

Hello everyone. Having discussed the refurbishment program with some people, it would appear that 4001 will also have the same flooring work done to 4040/4002 (and 4083 when it’s eventually done, I think it’s currently in Depot receiving the work) however this will not affect the current paint job and re-upholstered interior.

Any of these units require new complete ends?

I was traveling north on the M6 around 1800 and passed a HGV somewhere in Cumbria heading north with 2 grey front ends for something. 3 windows in the end, no exit door in the end and similar shape/style to Tyne and Wear metro car. Each end had about 1m of both side panels.

4021 required a rebuild of its front end in early 2019 but I dont know about the others. Could be just spares if they are indeed Metrocar front ends. Or the front ends from 4022...

The items were plain grey (like grey primer) inside and out. no windows or any fittings. So like new. if from 4022, then completely stripped down, cleaned and painted.

Are there any estimates for when 4001 will return (presumably on weekday peak only) ?

As of today, its my last one...

I think it will be when 4083 is completed. (pictured above, photo not mine)

Dunno if it will be of anyone’s interest but 4022’s front ends are now at Gosforth (pictured below)

Must be using the unrefurbished units again. Just seen 4002 paired with 4040 today at Pelaw.

4002 and 4040 are used for the extra short services and as we are back to an almost full timetable they are required in service.
4001 is complete and is being kept inside of the depot.
