Hi all,

I'm new to RailUKforums but I have been following various Tyne and Wear Metro threads over the past few months.

I have compiled a list of all Tyne and Wear Metro Rolling Stock which have currently been refurbished. If anyone could help and provide me with more information it would be greatly appreciated. I aim to keep updating this list on a regular basis and making regular posts on the forum.

Thanks in advance

Tom

That's all I'm aware of that isn't on your list currently. I'm sure '142094' will have some more for you to add to that if I've missed any! :P It may also be worth checking Youtube/CoachAlex's flickr as he tends to post the refurbs going to/from Donny.

If I'm correct with that list, there is currently 36 units unrefurbished but 4 units are apparently won't be heading to Doncaster. Two of them are confirmed rather sadly to be the prototypes(4001/02)

Its also a bit sad too see the variety in the fleet in terms of liveries is also decreasing with each refurbished unit carrying the new grey and black scheme but I suppose one standard livery does give the fleet a more uniformed appearance. It will be interesting what will happen to the four unrefurbished units in terms of their appearance, one may speculate a very basic refresh may occur e.g new livery, seat covers.

Which other two aren't to be refurbished?

Will these four become parts donors?

Hi Paul_10, ModernRailways and rg177.

Thank you so much for your help. At least I've got an understanding of what units are currently refurbished and which ones aren't. Hopefully we can keep adding to this as more Metros go in for refurbishment in the coming months.

In relation to the 4 Metros which will not be refurbished I would expect those to be painted into the new livery so they blend in with the livery of the fleet. Since they are not doing a complete overhaul on them. I would expect them to be painted, have new seat covers and have their lights replaced. In addition I would also expect them to have the new emergency procedure stickers that are on the new metros in the front, middle and back of the carriages to keep passengers informed of what to do in an emergency as this should have been a standard thing on Metro's a long time ago.

If I manage to get a picture of the stickers in question, I will post it on the thread.

Thanks again and I hope to remain in contact with you all as we continue to update the list. :D

Think Paul_10 has the list just about spot on. The latest one to come back and is in service is 4070 I believe.

4083 is probably one of the other cars which will not be refurbished due to it hitting a bus at Kingston Park in the early days. The 4 unrefurbished cars will be used for training but also can be used for special events.

This happened before the first refurbishments and the front ends were totally rebuilt during the last refurbishment so I can't see this being a factor?

Besides, I'm sure I read the Emirates metrocars advert contract was just for a year only so one may imagine 4040/83 could be due for refurbishment?

It would be interesting too see if the four unrefurbished units will be used as a last resort if we ever get a situation like winter 2010 where the fleet suffered problems which resulted in peak trains being totally cancelled for a while.

4056 is the latest unit to be back into service, was paired with 4072.

Think it is more to do with the bodywork frame being damaged rather than the front end - would have cost more to remedy that compared to the rest of the fleet.

Does anyone know anything about 4045? If it's gone down for refurb it is one of the very few that hasn't been photographed going down. And if it's in the depot it's being hidden from view.

It's been in the depot for a very long time now!

No of OLD Metro's: 33
No of REFURBISHED Metro's: 51
No of Metro's off for Refurbishment: 5

I'm still unsure as to what the status of 4045 is, which is why i haven't added it to any of the total's. If anyone see's or knows anything about it, I'd be interested to know. Also, if anyone manages to get a picture of it, pleased upload it onto the thread.

If anyone from Nexus or Wabtec who is reading this, knows the status of 4045 and could shed any light on this please do :)

Also, I've not put all the Refurb's in bold as these are beginning to outnumber the Old units.

At the rate these are getting refurbished, I expect completion on all expect 4 to be finished by late 2015.

4045 is still at the depot but having an exam. 4086 is now coupled with 4072.

4045 is having a D Exam. This is where the vestibule in the middle is taken out, so the car is effectively split in two. Big job to do.

Presumably these will become heritage sets due to their prototype nature?

That's what a certain somebody reckons.
My thoughts are that they will be kept for just over a year and then 4001 will be sent to the NRM and 4002 will be sent for scrap. With the other 2 units not going for refurbishment being kept as spares or being converted into a maintenance vehicle (possibly something similar to the Track Recording Train on LUL).

That seems to contradict what Nexus/Huw Lewis has been saying but I don't see how they will be used as "spare roles" as there be more than enough metrocars in service to cover for any special events.

Too me, whilst I know its down to the project going over budget, it seems to be a waste of 4 fine vehicles too me, surely they can recieve a minor refurb/refresh and be used on a rarely basis like peak services or something.

Of course with the 2020 DDA coming into force then the 4 remaining unrefurbished units future does look rather bleak but in fairness, I guess nobody knows what will happen until the refurbishment programme is over and perhaps Nexus can give a more definate answer then.

The trains will remain in service, but only see use when extra sets are required - this will be due to extra services (December, Great North Run, etc). The refurbished fleet will be enough for normal service, but do remember there are always a few out for routine work or inspection, not to mention if any receive damage such as when we had the flooding.

As for the RVAR compliance issue, Nexus as the owner can apply for an exemption - this has already been done on the mainline for things such as the narrow doorways on some of the Sprinter series stock.

Does very much seem a shame that the fleet is essentially being split though - as reliability inevitably decreases (owing to the the fact that traction hasn't been touched this time round) this will surely be problematic for the whole fixation Nexus have on high frequency service.

Jon

PS - If a "certain person" mentioned above is who I think, I'd pretty much take whatever he says to be fiction.

The four that are not being sent down to Wabtec will still be around until the rest of the fleet is retired, scrapping them early would be a mistake. 8 spare cars is not enough for a full timetable to be fulfilled and for routine maintenance work to take place.

The tricky part is that the four unrefurbished cars will not be interoperable with the Wabtec sets in passenger service. Wabtec and non-Wabtec sets can be coupled and driven as part of a 4 car consist but there are some differences which mean that one Wabtec and one non-Wabtec car cannot be used in passenger service as a 2 car set. Therefore, as soon as one non-Wabtec car needs maintenance, you have another car sitting around doing nothing.

Traction motors have their own overhaul timeframe, this is done on a different timescale to what is happening down at Doncaster, as most of the work can only be done at Gosforth depot. Also, traction motors get swapped between cars quite regularly. There was a point last year where they were being burned out very quickly due to the wheelslip, but thankfully the worst of that is over now.

4001 and 4002 are anything but fine. The amount of people who don't have the strength to push the button with one finger is amazing! They are loud, feel very old and the doors feel like they could kill someone with the way they slam open/closed!

As I said, my theory is that Nexus will keep 4001/4002 for a year or so, and then they will send them away claiming unreliability.

The other two units will be kept, and looked after but not refurbished. They will be used for extra services at Christmas and other busy periods.

I think you're forgetting something. Scrapping them early would be a mistake, but this is Nexus/DB... Have they done anything that hasn't been a complete mess?
