Since when did a defender lying down on the ground, just behind the rest of the defensive wall at a free-kick (to prevent a low free-kick sneaking in, should the rest of the wall jump up) become the vogue? o_O

It's been around a long time, in the early days it was only really seen in South America. Then players like Ronaldinho came over to Europe and started going under the wall but most defensive walls responded by having a couple of players that didn't jump instead of lying down. Over the last few years people such as Messi were putting free kicks under the wall much more than was seen previously so it just became a thing to lie down much more instead. Gets you a personal camera shot on the coverage as well.

Suggests it was a novel tactic 5 years ago. It’s definitely been a thing in matches I’ve watched in the last season.
Ta! Be a brave player to have tried that back in the day on the old Derby County Baseball Ground pitch. :|

That's a controversial VAR call in St Petersburg, denying Romelu Lukaku a 3rd tournament goal... one that would have seen Denmark finish second as things stand.

Or not, as Russia pull a goal back. 2-1 in Copenhagen now!

Don't you just love tournament football?

Gonna be a gripping last 20 minutes. The Denmark crowd don't know what to do with themselves, been through the ringer over the last 10 days or so.

The Belgians finally break through the Finnish defence... with the help of the crossbar, the Finland keeper, and hawkeye!

Come on Denmark!

2-0 Belgium now, and 4-1 Denmark...

There really is more intrigue in the pool games!

Well that's Wales facing Denmark in the round of 16, not going to be an easy game for them

Why did I watch the Belgium Finland game over the Denmark Russia match. Missed out on what was probably the match of the tournament.

The commentator last night whilst noting that a wall might jump did not comment on the player lying down, nor did the pundit alongside him.

It will be interesting to see who the locals are backing for that one, as it is being played in Amsterdam. Ajax are one of Christian Eriksen’s former clubs, so might influence the support a bit?

Well it sounds like, despite not being on their "safe list", The Netherlands are going to let fans from Denmark in as long as they are in the country for less than 12 hours. So expect thousands of Danes and basically no Welsh fans there.

Really getting the feeling that we are being royally stitched up in this tournament. Having to play basically as far away from home as possible in Baku for two of the games (with one of those basically being a home game for Turkey) whilst other teams get to play to (in some cases packed) home crowds, us having to play Italy in Rome, now this with the round of 16 game. Utter joke. And I'm sure it isn't targeted per se, but I do wonder if for future tournaments the pain should be shared a bit more fairly. E.g. no home games in the group stages at the very least etc. I appreciate COVID has made this more difficult this year but it seem feels like some teams and groups of fans have had it a hell of a lot better than others!

Within Schengen arrangements Welsh fans who have been in Rome might be able to travel to Amsterdam - probably less visibly by rail or car than by air (and without displaying their colours to hopefully remain invisible to the authorities)? They would of course still need to acquire match tickets.

Re the match itself, an interesting aside is that Leicester City provide both goalkeepers.

Wales playing two of their games in Baku is very bizarre.

When I first looked at an atlas during my primary school days many years ago, Baku is in Azerbaijan, which was a part of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics with Azerbaijan being in Asia. The tournament is one of the Union of European Football Associations showpieces, so how is one of the host cities is an Asian one?

Also, being as Wales were runners up in Group A (Italy being the winners), and Belgium being Group B winners (Denmark runners up), should Wales be playing Belgium rather than Denmark next? That would be the proper way of the second round opponents, as has been the case for a good number of years.

Remember it isn’t that simple this time, due to 4 third place teams qualifying. So I *think* it’s like this:

- the 4 third place teams all play a group winner
- the other 2 group winners play second place teams
- the other 4 second place teams play each other

Have the tournament organisers laid down a set of rules to determine such matters prior to the start of the competition?

Thank your lucky stars that this competition differs from The Eurovision Song Contest, as you might have ended up playing somewhere in Australia.... :D

Australia aside, the definition of "Europe" used by the EBU is much wider than what most people think. Israel is considered an anomaly but it is within the latitude/longitude boundaries. The EBU region includes north African nations, Iraq and Syria. Most of those countries are active members of the EBU and are thus allowed to enter the Eurovision Song Contest but choose not too. Morocco entered in the past.

I'd agree that it's not targeted to certain countries for any reason other than the luck of the draw, but some do definitely seem to have had it tougher than others without doubt. Wales probably had it hardest of all to be fair.

I personally would prefer to see it go back to one, or two, countries hosting it again. It's been worth doing it in this format to see how it worked, but I reckon we're better going back to how things were previously.

Having multiple host cities was only ever going to be a one-off occasion. The main reason for doing it this way was because Europe was going through a severe economic crisis, so having multiple host cities meant that existing stadiums could be used to save money, although Budapest decided to build a new one anyway. It also enables cities to host that wouldn't normally be able to following the usual single host country model.

And Southgate perseveres with two defensive midfielders. Might watch Scotland instead.

Is today the day Scotland qualify for the second round of an international football tournament?

And Southgate perseveres with two defensive midfielders. Might watch Scotland instead.

That is ok if the players in front of them perform. Rice and Phillips need to get the ball and give it to the attacking players and provide cover if the full backs crack on to add to the attack. The problem is when they don't and we have two sitting midfielders and 5/6 other players sitting!

England have to show more verve today, be more bold, be more accurate and incisive with passing and attack. Oh and pass FORWARDS! Win the game, win the group and stay at Wembley.

I think they were more worried about the shame of losing to the Sweaties than turning in a good performance.

Score predictions, anyone?

I'll go for England to win 1-0, and Scotland to lose 2-0.
I think Scotland will lose. I am not sure about England. We are always capable of dropping the ball so we will no doubt manage to cock this up and lose the Wembley advantage!

The winner of the England game gets a much harder reward in the next round, a draw might suit England.
